I get it, personal hygiene isn't always a big priority for us nerdy types. But it's reaaaally not hard to do the bare minimum to keep from stinking, guys. Have some consideration for others when emerging from your cave.

OMG that man is a legend!

[-] atx_aquarian@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Can we add brushing and flossing to this?

[-] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

Eh. The point is not to ensure everyone takes care of their health. The point is to make sure no one makes the space uninhabitable due to their BO.

[-] MellowYellow13@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Yes but do they actually enforce it is the biggest question. My game store most certainly does not.

[-] FishFace@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago

Plenty of people don't start to smell bad 24h after a shower, with or without deodorant. In winter, I'd guess it's actually most people.

I try to shower as infrequently as I can without stinking because it fucks up my skin every single time.

[-] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

To add: It's a good idea to occasionally check with someone else how you smell, because we notice our own smell less than others.

[-] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 2 points 1 month ago

I’ve spent too much time in unventilated back rooms for Magic tournaments. It was musty.

[-] Aliya@feddit.org 1 points 1 month ago

This should be on every bus and train door.

[-] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

This sign should be posted in my bedroom right now too. I'm about to kick myself out.

[-] ikidd@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

I'd rather smell unwashed gamer than the overpowering perfume in these bloody deodorants.

[-] hark@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Unpopular opinion but I agree. Maybe I don't hang around enough stinky people, but I've encountered far more instances of punch-in-the-face perfume/cologne than body odor.

[-] ikidd@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Thank you. Body odor is gross, but it doesn't give me an insta-headache like the chemicals people douse themselves in every day.

[-] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 month ago

You do know you can buy lighter scents....

[-] Ageroth@reddthat.com 1 points 1 month ago

Yeah but they can't make other people wear it. There's always that one person who thinks bathing in body spray is the same as actually bathing

In the mid 90's I was with a group of union apprentices attending the mandatory four week training at our headquarters in the Midwest. They put us up at a decent hotel in the downtown area. During our stay one year they had some kind of fantasy con. Many of these people were foul smelling. They were not used to being told they couldn't enter the elevator without getting fucked up. Some of my fellow apprentices were how shall we say it. Impulsively violent toward people who smelled like unwashed ass. After all nearly everyone of us would shower once or twice daily due to the job. The con attendees quickly learned how to use the back elevator away from our floor.

It was really kinda sad but the Navy also had a floor for their recruits to stay at while they were being processed in. Many were young women all of legal age with the navy personnel trying but not always succeeding in keeping those ladies away from forty or so young construction workers. One of their main tactics was to encourage the navy recruits to use the back elevator. In forcing those unwashed losers to the back we inflicted them on those recruits.

[-] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago

Like most signs, this will be ignored by the people it's intended for.

[-] fushuan@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 month ago

The point of the sign is to avoid them getting angry when you throw them out. They will, but others in the store will back you up.

[-] ryedaft@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

From my reading of social media there are two kinds of neurodivergents: 1) hates showering, most unpleasant experience, sensory overload 2) loves showering, could live in the shower, sometimes exits the shower and realises that they forgot to wash their hair or soap up or something. Only misses their daily shower when they are very busy and can't find an hour in their schedules.

You may be a neurotypical if you:

  • shower each day
  • complete your shower in less than 10 minutes
  • don't forget any of the 1-3 things you are supposed to do in the shower
  • have no strong feelings about showering

10 minutes

How do you wash in that time? That’s just enough to get wet.

[-] Typotyper@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 month ago

5 minutes baby. Military taught me to eat fast, shower fast, fall asleep fast, and clean like i have OCD

[-] Empricorn@feddit.nl 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

You did your service faithfully! It's time to relax and slow down now, you deserve it...

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 0 points 1 month ago

What’s wrong with not wearing deodorant? That shit has a ton of aluminum and other garbage in it. It ruins your clothes. You just need to wash and change your clothes regularly.

[-] rehydrate5503@lemmy.world -1 points 1 month ago

The BO AOE cloud that follows not wearing deodorant is what’s wrong with not wearing it.

Lots of them do have aluminum, but more and more brands now have new formulations without it. Most of the mainstream ones in my area have variants. There are also more natural ones available like Dr. Squatch, but I haven’t had good luck with it (melted during summer, but was effective).

As far as ruining your clothes, do you mean staining the armpit area? I’ve only had that happen to a couple of tshirts years ago with Axe deodorant sticks.

[-] ryannathans@aussie.zone -1 points 1 month ago

Don't wear a deodorant that contains aluminium then, not that hard...

[-] Credibly_Human@lemmy.world -1 points 1 month ago

Ha ha lol lets insult customers!

Seriously I do not understand signs like this.

They only scold the very customers they want, while they will bounce off the customers they don't want.

These signs are self masturbatory in nature. Just someone who wants to rant and feel better than others in a public fashion.

[-] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 1 points 1 month ago

No one wants the stinky customers. If you're insulted by this you should stfu and take a bath.

[-] Credibly_Human@lemmy.world -1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I fear you might be able to read, but not able to comprehend.

There are a legion of other people who also jump to insults pretending they cant understand the problem.

[-] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 0 points 1 month ago

I fear you're the one who is having trouble reading. The sign clearly delineates who is allowed and who is not. Wearing deodorant and showered within the last 24 hours =Welcome. No deodorant or has not showered =fuck off. How is this insulting ALL customers?

[-] Credibly_Human@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

At this point your comment is tantamount to trolling, because there is no way you don't understand my message.

[-] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Disagreeing with you is not the same as misunderstanding.

[-] Credibly_Human@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

You aren't disagreeing honestly. You're disagreeing as if you can't see my arguments. I wish lemmy as a platform had a "mute replies to this comment" so I could stop seeing the replies on this thread specifically. No one is arguing in good faith, they're all, like you, masturbating to the idea of feeling superior to people rather than acknowledging the disrespect to the customers.

[-] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 1 points 1 month ago

I can see your arguments, they are based on the incorrect presumption that this sign is insulting to all customers. It isn't, it clearly spells out who it's intended to disrespect. Anyone that doesn't meet that criteria is free to walk right by.

[-] ryathal@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

That's not a sign that just gets put up. That's a response to a problem.

[-] Credibly_Human@lemmy.world -1 points 1 month ago

Im not arguing about whether it is or isn't. Im saying no sensible person thinks this is actually a solution and this is 100% a narcissism play.

[-] zalgotext@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

What's a sensible solution to the problem of unhygienic customers then

[-] Credibly_Human@lemmy.world -1 points 1 month ago

Ill tell you what it isn't: This.

Rude and demeaning text aimed at your customers absolutely does not help the problem.

They could try a probably still bad approach of saying the rooms are warm and so people might want to pay more attention to this.

They could have people just approach those who smell and point it out to them politely

They could have better air exchange to mitigate the problem when not caught.

There are so many options which arent this, because this simply does not work.

[-] CaptnNMorgan@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

The only way someone would be offended by this, is if they don't wear deodorant and are aware of their own BO, but decided it's actually a good thing that everyone can smell it.

Wanting everyone to have a good time and not have to smell something horrible isn't in any way narcissistic.

Thinking it's okay to make everyone else smell your own BO, absolutely is narcissistic.

[-] Credibly_Human@lemmy.world -1 points 1 month ago

Not at all.

If you are a regular person, it tells you that you are associated with this now.

It means you don't want to go to a place that is associated with this.

Wanting everyone to have a good time and not have to smell something horrible isn’t in any way narcissistic.

You pretending you don't understand my point doesnt make your argument sound.

[-] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 1 points 1 month ago

As a regular person, if I saw this I would be glad they were saying something. I wouldn't associate myself with it because I know that I bathe regularly and don't smell like rancid asshole. I spent a lot of time the game store in my town when I was a kid and mfers that couldn't wash properly were absolutely a problem.

[-] Credibly_Human@lemmy.world -1 points 1 month ago

You wouldn't think that people seeing this sign, and then seeing you, would just assume you were one of the people affected by this sign? Or that the person who put the sign up was hostile towards their customers?

What of the myriad of other, actually effective methods to combat the problem, over this, a completely ineffective way?

[-] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 1 points 1 month ago

If I was inside the store I would assume that people seeing me would know that I have passed the smell test and am therefore not part of the problem. The person that put up the sign is hostile towards stinky people and assholes, they've shown no ill-intent towards anyone else by posting this.

What of the myriad of other, actually effective methods to combat the problem, over this, a completely ineffective way?

What of them? This is just doing the first step automatically. It's the same concept as a no trespassing sign. By having it there they have already been given notice of the rules, and if they ignore it have no recourse when you escalate to kicking them out.

[-] Credibly_Human@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

This makes no sense. You could kick them out the same regardless of the sign. The sign only serves the purpose I'm mentioning and I've not seen an argument otherwise.

[-] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 1 points 1 month ago

By having the sign there, a certain percentage of stinky people are going to know they aren't welcome and leave without having to be told. For those who ignore it, the employees of the store and other customers now all have a posted policy they can point to when they ask them to leave. Opposed to not having the sign and it being left open to argument.

[-] Credibly_Human@lemmy.world -1 points 1 month ago

By having the sign there, a certain percentage of stinky people are going to know they aren’t welcome and leave without having to be told.

That percentage is precisely 0.

People aren't going in thinking they're stink, and the ones who were before, won't stop after.

For those who ignore it, the employees of the store and other customers now all have a posted policy they can point to when they ask them to leave. Opposed to not having the sign and it being left open to argument.

It wouldn't be left open to argument regardless.

All this does is insult their customer base. That's literally it. It serves no practical or functional purpose.

Any time I see signs generally insulting a customer base like this, you've lost me as a customer. Not just specifically this sign, but any sign in general talking down to customers.

I can't believe the number of people who support this.

[-] webp@mander.xyz 0 points 1 month ago

How is it so rude and demeaning? It literally is just a warning sign that if someone doesn't have a hygenic lifestyle they will be asked to leave.
