He got to close to the truth

[-] godlessworm@hexbear.net 32 points 1 month ago

those bastards… he was too close. they had to sabotage his mission. we know the truth tho. i specifically observed my wife when she was leaving me and her car drove straight in a line out of my life for what felt like forever. and we’re supposed to believe the earth has a curve. this was exactly what i was telling her when she left. all because they got to her. the globalists.

globalists

I think you mean discalists dean-sussy

[-] ConcreteHalloween@hexbear.net 27 points 1 month ago

From what I understand this guy was more of a daredevil who said he MAYBE believed in flat earther shit so he could get them to crowd fund his janky rocket builds.

[-] Keld@hexbear.net 23 points 1 month ago

You know flat earthers who do this sort of stuff are at least sticking by their convictions. They have full faith in a sort of warped logical positivism, and based on this they have a thesis that they wish to prove and they set out to do so. It is a very pure embrace of scientific principles. There was one of them a while back who got up pretty far in some homemade device and subsequently abandoned flat earthism

I like this one where some guy took 48 flat earthers to Antarctica and made them see a midnight sun.

The participating flat Earthers all admitted that the midnight sun was a real phenomenon. The larger flat Earth community has largely rejected the results and accused the participants, including the flat Earthers, of having faked the expedition and of being part of a larger conspiracy to promote the spherical Earth model.

[-] ghosts@hexbear.net 20 points 1 month ago

You're telling me I can grift my way to a free trip to Antarctica???

[-] happybadger@hexbear.net 21 points 1 month ago

There's an even better grift where they'll pay for your food and lodging if you get a PhD first. I'm trying to pull a fast one on NASA and get on the ISS to avoid paying rent.

Alabama pastor Dean Odle suggested that Satan created a fireball to act as a false sun. Some flat Earthers accused Duffy of taking funds from his church to finance the expedition, which he has denied. Dominic Enyart, a friend of Duffy and a member of his congregation, said the accusations were baseless

hahaha

[-] Keld@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago

I didn't know about that one, that's funny as hell

[-] UmbraVivi@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago

can't call him a grifter at least

[-] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago

[-] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago

[-] Rod_Blagojevic@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago

Did the camera survive?

[-] TheSovietOnion@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I seriously felt something poetic in the video. Someone less literature-challenged than me should write something about his final seconds seeing the curve of the earth then reminiscing about his whole life and how he ruined it as he falls to the ground trapped in that thing

''All those years designin' an' craftin' in my garage had come to this moment. I'm finally takin' off an' if it's round, my bad, but if it's flat like a pancake, I'm gonna be thrilled to tell the folks back home. I can't wait to see their faces, an' prove Bobby Jay an' the naysayers wrong. Yeehaw! Let's gooo!...Wow, we're doin' it, I can't believe it, it's really happenin'! I'm almost through the troposphere! Betcha nobody knows I know that word...Huh? The horizon ain't lookin' so flat from here...Is it bendin'? Wait, why's the sky movin' away from me? No, no, I've come this close, it can't!...Shit, what's goin' on, - ->Research<- -! Don't die on me, baby! Maybe I need more thrust, let me press this an' that...I'm fallin' an' the thrusters ain't doin' shiiit...Is this it? All this tinkerin' an' buildin', an' I forgot to build an ejection seat, I didn't even plan where to land since I'd hit space an' float like a dingy...Shiiit, the floor's closin' in...!''

''Hi, Jimmy here, reporting for CBS News. We just got word that ''Mad'' Mike Hughes' homemade rocket has crashed. Some say, he died doing what he loved, and that's a lesson this community knows well. They saw Mike working hard everyday to make his dream come true. But his incredible dream of seeing the stars and proving the Earth was flat was cut short when his beloved homemade rocket, - ->Research<- -, ran out of steam, in what onlookers described as: ''a Wile E. Coyote reenactment''. Our heart goes out to the city of Barstow. Mike will be remembered for his bravery and dedication. This was Jimmy for CBS News, back to you guys at the studio.''

This is some Looney toons shit

[-] casskaydee@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago

Not entirely convinced it isn't an elaborate viral marketing scheme for the upcoming Coyote v. Acme movie

[-] Monk3brain3@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

[-] SwitchyandWitchy@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago

I laughed at the fact that I didn't remember who Brian Thompson is but I remember Luigi hahaha

[-] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago

[-] context@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago

[-] SwitchyandWitchy@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago

[-] ConcreteHalloween@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago

I like the idea that in his final moments he saw the curve and was like "well shit..."

Out of his what

spoiler

Seriously though, this mostly makes me sad thinking of a world where people can dedicate themselves this much to their passion (however stupid) instead of grinding from birth to death

[-] pierre_delecto@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago

this guy and the titanic guy seem very similar, but at least Mike didn't take anybody else out with him

I was watching some old Evel Knievel stunts on youtube a month go, he used a similar steam powered rocket to attempt to jump Snake River, failed but he used the parachute to land safely. Looks like Mike Hughes' parachute came off right at ignition?

[-] cream_provider@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

It looked like it. That’s some real wile e. coyote shit.

[-] AOCapitulator@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago

those fools are going to say this proves the world is flat and they killed him to stop him from exposing the truth

[-] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago

Wait, didn't this happen already?

[-] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

this is a video about that guy, from what i remember he may have not been a true flat earth believer but wanted to break a record and used flat earthers to finance it

[-] AOCapitulator@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago

so he was just a fuckup then
