Tylenol and Autism joke

Took me a second

[-] 69420@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

I never would have got there.

[-] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 weeks ago

I thought it was a blow job joke and that they wouldn't have been born.

[-] Rhaedas@fedia.io 1 points 3 weeks ago

I took it as a sex joke too, but actually meaning if the mother hadn't skipped out on the previous sex the person wouldn't have been conceived because there was already someone else.

[-] avg@lemmy.zip 0 points 2 weeks ago

That's probably because your mom didn't suck up that last headache.

[-] MeThisGuy@feddit.nl 1 points 2 weeks ago

you should have been a blowjob?

[-] Dadifer@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

If her mom hadn't taken Tylenol, she wouldn't be bothered by the sound of tags rubbing in her shirt

[-] chuckleslord@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Sound is probably incorrect. Volume in this case relates to the "volume" of the feeling of the tags. Describing how the feeling of tags is overwhelming compared to its actual impact.

[-] krooklochurm@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 weeks ago

Her mom took Tylenol now she has autism

[-] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

It's probably not relevant, but on the subject of fabrics: have you guys ever noticed how velvet and its ilk make it literally impossible to breathe?

[-] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Wow, this is something I've noticed for my whole life but never talked about or anything, just assumed it was some odd quirk of mine. But yes, I have a specific recollection of touching some kind of paper that had like a velour side to it, and just catching my breath for some reason, and it's happened a handful of times in the last 30+ years since then.

Fuck tags. I absolutely despise them. I rip those pitches off everything. Blanket? Rip that hoe off. Shirt? Fuck you i rather have a hole in my shirt than a tag. Pillow? Hell no. Fuck tags man

[-] buttnugget@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Tags are the worst. I’m so happy for the trend of silk screening them onto the fabric directly.

[-] faythofdragons@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 weeks ago

It's the polyester, imo. A lot of natural fibers get fuzzier as they wear, but the plastic fiber tags will polish to a sharp edge.

[-] Broadfern@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Their mom probably also is weirdly particular about certain textures “for no reason at all” 👀

[-] krooklochurm@lemmy.ca -1 points 3 weeks ago

I can't stand tags.

I love certain textures. Anything soft. Some book covers.

I need to wear my socks inside out because the seams drive me insane.

I hate bright lights.

Uh oh

[-] mika_mika@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Congratulations you have Sense Perception if you haven't received a formal diagnosis you're probably just normal.

[-] jj4211@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

Wait, being irritated by tags in shirt is an autism thing? I just thought it was a pretty common kid thing...

[-] Aneb@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

I still get irritated by tags in my shirt if they are by my neck

[-] jj4211@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, but as adults we start to just declare we are going to suck it up more.

[-] mika_mika@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Big doubt this person is on the severe on the autism disorder spectrum and is just a social media user seeking engagement.

No one likes obnoxious tags.

Looking through the comments highlights once again that neurotypicals continue to invalidate neurodivergent experiences because they do no understand the experience. Part of it is certainly due to the language we continue to use, as it doesnt explain the full extent of the experience. But another is just neurotypical people refusing to understand the struggles of neurodivergent people.

In relation to specifically this meme, yes most people do not like tags. Most people find them irritable and uncomfortable. The difference is autistic people are more senstive to sensory things, to the point something like a tag itching at your neck becomes an excrutiating and unmanageable experience.

If you can go a whole day wearing a shirt with a tag in it with no major issues, you are probably not autistic. If when you wear a shirt with a tag it is a unbearable sensation, something you cant ignore and stresses you out to the point you cant go a full day wearing it and still function as a humanbeing, you are probably autistic.

For future reference for neurotypical people, stop assuming you know what being neurodivergent is. For those people trying to find the fakers, stop. You arent a doctor, just like how that person you are trying to accuse of self diagnosing for attention is also not a doctor. You genuinely do not know what you are talking about and are genuinely no better than all the transphobic chuds that "transvestigate" people. At best you called out a shitty person trying to earn internet points (someone who will not think twice about your comment), and at worse you are invalidating someone's personal lived experience (something that can seriously affect their mental health).

If someone is talking about their experience as a neurodivergent person and you think "Hey I do that," there are two more likely possibilities than that they are faking. Either 1. You are autistic and don't know it. Or 2. You are not understanding the full extent of what they are talking about.

[-] Lemminary@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

I find it weird to be attacking neurotypicals for not understanding neurodivergents and then saying this stuff about tags, which is almost universally irritating. It really does take a kind of person not to have that bother them.

Also, who is invalidating experiences? I either couldn't find them or I'm blind to it. If anything, people are saying not to self-diagnose, and others are agreeing that neurodivergents may find that more irritating than usual.

[-] FeatherConstrictor@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I'm sorry for the negative responses you're getting on this. You have a point and in my opinion your comment comes across as being frustrated yet still respectful. You're not attacking anyone, you're expressing an annoyance you have on a forum in a thread that's on topic. It's exactly the right place for you to say this. I'm so shocked at the response you're getting on this! It doesn't make any sense to me.

[-] faythofdragons@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 weeks ago

If you can go a whole day wearing a shirt with a tag in it with no major issues, you are probably a neurotypical.

This is why the downvotes. Not all neurodivergent people are autistic, and not autistic people have this specific sensory problem. For example, my partner doesn't have a problem with tags, but that doesn't override his ADHD diagnosis and make him neurotypical.

[-] dream_weasel@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

I just want to say I spent almost 45 minutes to attempt to respond to this and ended up just deleting it.

I'm sure it's tough to be neurodivergent, and there are plenty neurotypical folks who would like to understand and make your life easier. I would also like to understand and support other minority positions, and every one is an investment of time and effort.

[-] SoftestSapphic@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

Can you find a real outlet for this indignant justice fetish?

[-] Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net 0 points 2 weeks ago

Your argument is valid, but your approach is wrong.

[-] buttnugget@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

What other approach do you suggest?

[-] Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 weeks ago

Less absolutist in laying out the argument. He comes off as 'once again I'm proven right' which isn't a great way to get a point across.

I get the frustration, certainly, but it just shuts down discussion rather than fostering it
