The black-footed cat (Felis nigripes), also called the small-spotted cat, is the smallest wild cat in Africa, having a head-and-body length of 35–52 cm (14–20 in). Despite its name, only the soles of its feet are black or dark brown. With its bold small spots and stripes on the tawny fur, it is well camouflaged, especially on moonlit nights. It bears black streaks running from the corners of the eyes along the cheeks, and its banded tail has a black tip.

The first black-footed cat known to science was discovered in the northern Karoo of South Africa and described in 1824. It is endemic to the arid steppes and grassland savannas of Southern Africa. It was recorded in southern Botswana, but only a few authentic records exist in Namibia, in southern Angola and in southern Zimbabwe. Due to its restricted distribution, it has been listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List since 2002. The population is suspected to be declining due to poaching of prey species for human consumption as bushmeat, persecution, traffic accidents, and predation by herding dogs.

The black-footed cat has been studied using radio telemetry since 1993. This research allowed direct observation of its behaviour in its natural habitat. It usually rests in burrows during the day and hunts at night. It moves between 5 and 16 km (3 and 10 mi) on average in search of small rodents and birds. It feeds on 40 different vertebrates and kills up to 14 small animals per night. It can catch birds in flight, jumping up to 1.4 m (5 ft) high, and also attacks mammals and birds much heavier than itself. A female usually gives birth to two kittens during the Southern Hemisphere summer between October and March. They are weaned at the age of two months and become independent after four months of age at the latest.

The worst part about philosophy. Apart from all the other stuff thats worse. Is that some philosophers still seem to think they can do the ancient Greek thing of just vibing their way through natural phenomena and base conclusions on their vibed explanation of a natural phenomena.

[-] plinky@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

scientists don't know philosophy and invent 500 year old thought experiment from first principles vs philosophers who have heard of like darwin and vague ideas about quantum theory (dft? dft these nuts, i'm pondering the structures)

I regret to share that I am sick, and must lay around watching silly YouTube videos with my stuffed blahaj until my appetite rejoins me

Star Trek Voyager, S4 episode: Prey

Spoilers from the episode

Good lord how annoyed I got with Janeway as she was scolding the good material girl Seven about morality. Ngl it annoys me endlessly how willing they supposedly always are in sacrificing everyone to literally save the baddies, or in this case one baddie. This was too lib to enjoy.

Also what's with the clothing they make Seven wear? Obviously there can be no independent smart rational women without turning them into sex objects.

Plus these races they supposedly encouter, no civiliation would survive if it was all about violence.

Also the endless earth culture stanning done supposedly by all, not to mention stanning white dudes from earth like the episodes with Da Vinci is getting a bit old after watching TNG, DS9 and now this back to back.

The weak sides of the pre-Marxian materialism, which appeared as a trend among French materialists (especially in Cabanis and La Mettrie) and later in Feuerbach, and acquired independent form in the middle of the nineteenth century as so-called vulgar materialism (Büchner, Vogt, Moleschott, and others), were linked with an unhistorical, anthropological, naturalistic conception of the nature of man and led to a rapprochement and ultimately to direct identification of the ideal with the material, neurophysiological structures of the brain and their functions. The old materialism set out from a conception of man as part of nature but, not bringing materialism as far as history, it could not understand man in all his peculiarities as a product of labour transforming both the external world and man himself. By virtue of that the ideal could not be understood as the result and active function of labour, of the sensuously objective activity of social man, as the image of the external world arising in the thinking body not in the form of the result of passive contemplation but as the product and form of active transformation of nature by the labour of generations succeeding one another in the course of historical development. The main transformation that Marx and Engels effected in the materialist conception of the nature of the ideal therefore related primarily to the active aspect of the relation of thinking man to nature, i.e. the aspect that had been mainly developed, as Lenin put it, by ‘clever’ idealism, by the line of Plato-Fichte-Hegel, and was emphasised by them in an abstract, one-sided, idealist way.

(Evald Ilyenkov, "The Ideal in Human Activity," Progress Publishers)

I should be reading Hegel but I just can't put down the Soviet philosophy and psychology books.

another reason i refuse to read, so many writers write so much to say so little, like come on Evald you're not in high school you don't need to pad out these paragraphs

[-] hello_hello@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago

It probably makes more sense in context than as a short excerpt that relates vulgar materialism to human psychology following from Vygotsky. The whole work is uploaded online https://www.marxists.org/admin/books/activity-theory/ilyenkov/ideal-activity.pdf

It is refreshing to read soviet literature though, you don't have to, at the very least, steel your mind against random spouts of idealism and anticommunism.

I love paying $7k/year so my wife and I can have health insurance, but still potentially owing up to $4k if either of us has to go to the emergency room.

We need a Luigi version of John Brown.

I am working toward a Great Unified Theory, or as I call it the Mother of All Effort Posts (M.E.A.P.). You will never have to provide an argument again, a simple link to my effort post will be the only debate needed for perhaps the next 30 or 40 years. My intention is to put the dog in dogma, thinking will simply become an afterthought

The house that has been sitting empty across the street for me for years got bought and torn down recently. Today theyre building the foundation for whatever theyre putting in. So there has been an excavator with a pneumatic jackhammer operating across the street from my since early this morning

[-] john_browns_beard@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

We've had four houses sell on my street in the five years we've lived there, and every single one has been torn down and replaced with an ugly McMansion on a postage stamp-sized lot. One of them must belong to somebody who owns multiple houses because it's empty like 90% of the time.

There are also 3 or 4 houses on a neighboring street that are obviously empty 100% of the time, assumedly just collecting money for faceless rich ghouls somewhere.

5 hours of daylight left where I am and it's been just raining, raining and raining for weeks now.

It's dark all day long. Dark, gloomy and cloudy. I no longer remember what the sun looks like.

Normally I don't mind the winters and love me the darkness, but now it's just so eternally dark that it's getting to me. The weather is like the world.

Lol, Larian releasing a cool teaser for their new Divinity game and then wounding their reputation by immediately saying they use AI is very funny. You hate to see it.
