6 months?!?

[-] BodyBySisyphus@hexbear.net 8 points 15 hours ago

The big one was used as the inspiration for the street layout in a subdivision in Tempe, Arizona.

Inaccurate. It doesn't show the people wasting their teenage years completely unable to talk to anyone and not learning how to form a relationship.

[-] TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net 12 points 22 hours ago

Those don't make for titillating prestige TV.

You'll get a show like Derry Girls or The end of the fucking world (both of which are great don't get me wrong), and that's about it.

They're just not pictured in this graph. If you scroll to the next image you'll see them.

spoilerThere is no next image

[-] Blep@hexbear.net 27 points 1 day ago

I figure they just aren't included on the chart.

Like, I am a conventionally attractive fella and while not that much of a player, I do have lots of opportunities but damn. That is just 6 months. That's a different girl every 3 days. I don't even jerk it that often...

[-] tactical_trans_karen@hexbear.net 12 points 21 hours ago

Teens are horny and have poor judgement. If you have a kid who's confident and a smooth talker, you get this. Some people discover their rizz at a young age.

[-] emeralddawn45@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 22 hours ago

How are you getting that number? It's a girl every three weeks or like every 20 days assuming I counted right at 9 girls.

[-] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 13 points 22 hours ago

oops I did mess up and went by weeks not months

[-] JustSo@hexbear.net 15 points 23 hours ago

Sex degrees of separation.

Original paper data is from (available on Sci-Hub):

https://doi.org/10.1086/386272

I'm actually not sure where this specific figure was taken from (the one in the original paper is greyscale), but I found a version in this paper (open access):

https://doi.org/10.1186/s41018-020-00071-7

Unfortunately, the diagram is a raster image rather than a vector image, so I can't make an arbitrarily high-resolution version, but I rendered the PDF to a PNG, brought down the page header, and added the DOI so that people can easily find the full paper in the future:

[-] Awoo@hexbear.net 29 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The person that made this specifically ignored gay relationships. There is not a single lesbian or gay relationship depicted. You can not tell me that there was not even a single pair of girls experimenting. I will accept gay guys hiding it successfully enough to not get it logged but no lesbians? Bullshit.

Anyway, this dude knows he has "it":

Edit: I'm wrong, after reading the paper and finding them discussing it, I realised there are two:

[-] MemesAreTheory@hexbear.net 29 points 1 day ago

Several other users have pointed out two same sex pairs. I wouldn't be surprised if it's just totally under reported, though.

[-] glimmer_twin@hexbear.net 19 points 22 hours ago

Considering it’s based on self report i wouldnt be surprised if the queer kids were not ready to come out to some random interviewer lol. Especially since it seems they would be also outing whoever they were fucking?

[-] SerialExperimentsGay@hexbear.net 9 points 22 hours ago

Yeah i'm assuming that as well, but that does show that the interviews were conducted in a way that did not make people feel safe and anonymous enough to answer intimate questions honestly, which calls the other findings into doubt as well.

[-] TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net 6 points 22 hours ago

I know teenagers are way different now, and hookup culture wasn't much of a thing when I was growing up, but in my experience a lot of queer people are late bloomers. I didn't get really laid until late in life because I realized who I was really attracted to.

[-] abc@hexbear.net 13 points 23 hours ago

[-] dave@feddit.uk 14 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

Or just 1 willing to reveal it one

Edit: 2, lots of others commented it

[-] Orcocracy@hexbear.net 10 points 22 hours ago

I’ve only spotted one, at the end of a branch on the upper right of the big complex network.

[-] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 31 points 1 day ago

That top structure is just the goth tables at the cafeteria

[-] SwitchyandWitchy@hexbear.net 33 points 1 day ago

Not gay enough. They must've left out the theater crew.

[-] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 22 points 1 day ago

Hey now calling the theatre kids gay is a homophobic stereotype.

That said I'm also a gay theatre kid so not really beating the allegations.

[-] SwitchyandWitchy@hexbear.net 13 points 1 day ago

I was part of the crew that's why I called us out XD

[-] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 8 points 1 day ago

Gay theatre kid to revolutionary communist seems to be a whole thing.

I see 1 (one) same sex relationship.

[-] Blep@hexbear.net 25 points 1 day ago

I count 2, definitely still massive undercount

[-] LeninWeave@hexbear.net 16 points 1 day ago

I count one (gay) on top of the right appendage of the huge blob and one (lesbian) in the middle of the second grouping on the first row.

Yeah real "they were roommates" hours in this graph

[-] invalidusernamelol@hexbear.net 26 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

So mostly monogamous straight couples in this highschool?

Wait.. that giant ring is... Oh

[-] regul@hexbear.net 23 points 1 day ago

It does just say "romantic", not "sexual". Keep the volcel police on standby.

[-] Hermes@hexbear.net 8 points 21 hours ago

This is from 2004, the people in this image are at least 35 years old by this point.

[-] blunder@hexbear.net 11 points 1 day ago

What's crazy is there is definitely a version with everyone's names lol

[-] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 5 points 23 hours ago

Somebody had made the graph already for gossip reasons. They just took off the names for publication.
