It's either very very small or very very large.

[-] MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

This would be funnier if there were a gigantic banana floating in space

A couple problems here:

  1. The image resolution isn’t high enough for a banana to be visible at this scale.
  2. This isn’t the Milky Way (it’s impossible to take a picture from outside our own galaxy), so bananas do not exist there. This means the banana would have to be photoshopped in, in which case you might as well photoshop a map scale.

Nice picture, but I call BS 🤔

Edit: Omg, I forgot to mention the most obvious giveaway. Our supermassive black hole doesn’t have a quasar! Busted!

[-] stupidcasey@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I don't believe you, if this isn't our galaxy how did he get the banana in the picture?

[-] roguetrick@lemmy.world 45 points 3 days ago

so bananas do not exist there

This guy honestly doesn't believe in panbanania.

The theory that the universe was seeded with banana life by an intergalactic precursor race of bananas? It’s possible, but so far there is no hard evidence, and I don’t think OP is claiming to have taken a picture of an alien banana.

The theory that the universe was seeded with banana life by an intergalactic precursor race of bananas?

This was covered in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation called The Chase:

They do. Just not the versions we eat. Those are genetic clones and are propagated seedlessly. If you look closely sometimes you can see undeveloped seeds in bananas. They're the little black dots near the center that you see sometimes.

Here is a picture of a land race banana with seeds:

[-] 0_o7@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago

Oh man, I had eaten bananas with seeds but they were tiny like they are in kiwis. I thought the image would be similar to those but instead the seeds are as big as like lentils.

Took me by surprise

[-] LeapSecond@lemmy.zip 22 points 3 days ago

Of course this isn't our galaxy, that's why OP was so kind to add the missing banana for us

[-] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 14 points 3 days ago

The image resolution isn’t high enough for a banana to be visible at this scale.

Pinch to zoom, brah.

"Computer, enhance!"

[-] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

There could be a teapot in there somewhere though.

[-] starik@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

Let’s assume there is one until someone proves otherwise.

[-] Natanael@infosec.pub 3 points 2 days ago

Pretty easy to get an Andromeda shot that includes banana for scale

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 10 points 3 days ago

How do you know bananas don’t exist outside of our galaxy?

[-] Lodespawn@aussie.zone 5 points 3 days ago

Err, they did photoshop a map scale .. the banana ..

[-] teft@piefed.social 5 points 3 days ago

Edit: Omg, I forgot to mention the most obvious giveaway. Our supermassive black hole doesn’t have a quasar! Busted!

That second point just isn't true. We have pictures of other galaxies

"I'll add it in post"

[-] Routhinator@startrek.website 1 points 2 days ago

Every banana in existence is in this picture.

[-] DancingBear@midwest.social 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

If the universe is infinite, there most certainly are bananas on an infinite number of planets.

(Sorry, I smoke way too much weed, mannnn.”)

[-] Stalinwolf@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 days ago

I never fully grasped the true scale of a single galaxy (and then expanded that understanding to the observable universe) until I hopped in my ship in Elite Dangerous and actually set off to cross one. Holy fucking shit, does it really help put it into perspective when you're traveling between vast galactic arms, hopping individual stars 50-70 Ly at a time and trying your damndest not to stretch yourself too thin in fear of running out of scoopable fuel/stars.

If I were an Astronomy teacher, Elite would be my most profound and precious tool.

[-] Sarcasmo@piefed.social 34 points 3 days ago

I like how you put it where (you thought) nobody would look.

You really should eat that banana before it goes bad. I see spots on it and one area looks soft and bruised.

No... That's not true... That would mean I would be old... I'm not ol oh fuck...

[-] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Please be interested.

I would say mission accomplished, probably generated far more interest than they could've imagined

[-] borf@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 3 days ago

That's what I get for not reading my own link

[-] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@piefed.world 1 points 3 days ago

And people keep clutching their pearls about skibidi and 6-7. We were way overdue for a new wave of slang.

[-] Solano@piefed.social 1 points 2 days ago

I need a red circle to show me where the banana is.

There's a red circle the size of Earth in there

[-] ekZepp@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

That would spoil the fun, would it?

[-] tomiant@piefed.social 3 points 3 days ago

That's peanuts to the Universe!

[-] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

This reminds me of an Italo Calvino short story about a guy doing backyard telescope observatory space viewing (whew) and he spots someone holding a sign on a distant star stating "I know what you did". The viewer now starts calculating exactly where he would have been at the time including light speed and distance light travels to reach him and all sorts of other calcs until he determines the time in the past and finally realizes "Whoa! He saw that!?".

[-] OddMinus1@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago

You got me. I leaned in to find the banana.

[-] Nima@leminal.space 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I can't seem to find the banana all that easily.

....your mom though. she's clearly visible at this scale. 😎

Hey! Why's that koala smiling?

[-] altphoto@lemmy.today 1 points 3 days ago

I saw one but don't know if its the one you added.
