America, no longer content to just sanction the rest of the world, has decided to also sanction itself

Yo that's a civil war

(Edited addendum: adding this about 40 minutes into the post. I'll say it may be hyperbolic to call this exact instance the shot that pops it off, but this being the ongoing policy, and likely going to ramp up as he keeps getting away with it, will almost assuredly cause a violent conflict between opposing state and fed factions in the US)

That's almost assuredly why walz dropped, he didn't want his state to get fucking sanctioned lmao

It's over baby

Other states are going to ally with each other as they do more of this shit, bam you've yourself at least two different fucking countries

Motherfucking fed just sent it's troops into minnesota, started killing and arresting citizens with explicit denouncement from the state, and is now sanctioning them

That is a war.

States have their own national guards, watch. Minnesota busts there's out, another state offers support from their own, and you've got a chain reaction

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 58 points 5 days ago

That is a war.

It'll be an odd war. Fascists on one side. The people (leftists and some liberals) on the other. Meanwhile the democratic party will be in the stands watching doing fucking nada to help. Yet they'll be lecturing the people "violence is not the answer" and nagging people endlessly to donate as they proclaim the next election is the most important of our lifetime. Centrists will openly lurch to the right as they assume a massive victory for the fascists. Matty will have a unpaywalled article setting the tone. Fascism: Different places have different forms of government and it's OK.

In all seriousness - Schumer and Jeffries won't even discuss cutting ICE's budget.

It's the official start of the bleeding Kansas period, at least.

[-] darkcalling@hexbear.net 33 points 4 days ago

Eh I doubt it.

Look to history. As much terrorism and violence as the right did over the civil rights era when the US federal government used some level of strong-arm tactics including deploying troops, siccing the FBI on them, etc, etc the people murmured and murmured in rage and then exactly nothing happened. Their politicians raged at the podium, they raged in the papers, they raged on TV and then nothing happened.

That's exactly what will happen this time. Trump will beat down Democratic opposition while at least half of Democratic voters cry foul for their party not standing up to him and the liberals and ourselves will seethe and rage. And there will be teeth gnashing and fiery speeches in the press and protests. But nothing will happen.

This isn't going to cause the US to break apart. It's not going to be civil war 2.0. It won't cause alliances of states. It won't result in challenges to federal power. It'll result in Trump bowling over opposition to implement what he wants and then Dems once back in power refusing to use those levers of power he just used so effectively because of muh norms and need to rebuild civility and blah blah blah. Democratic voter-base rage and anger will simmer but not boil over. Not over this.

[-] Wheaties@hexbear.net 26 points 4 days ago

But the Civil Rights Act did eventually pass - the rage never quite boiled over because it got channeled into realizing something. Even if it was kinda the bare minimum and did nothing to address all the violent state repression that precipitated it, there was at least a clear legal victory that let people feel some relief.

Where is that relief for this? All I see is the pressure getting ratcheted up for a few years, the circle of people who don't feel precarity constricts faster. And when the Dems eventually take office, they'll put the funding back in place^[though, what this does to Minnesota's agriculture in the meantime...]. Pretend like ICE is different now. The usual song and dance. Pressure will get notched down, but nothing is done to fully abate it -- let alone deal with the stress fractures.

Yes, this isn't The Thing that kicks off a big decisive Event in the history books. But its also hard not to see it as a threshold of some sort. There is almost certainly not going to be a direct, legal challenge to federal power... but maybe we see a scattered, piecemeal decoupling. Some states start to develop a trajectory that, in time, becomes increasingly unrelated to that of the overall federal government. Not out of a conscious choice, but simply by necessity and circumstance.

The war spreads further and Maduro breaks out of prison to lead the revolution. The empire finally collapses.

[-] tactical_trans_karen@hexbear.net 67 points 5 days ago

Yeah... We're balkanizing.

[-] SuperZutsuki@hexbear.net 46 points 5 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I fucking hope so. Get it over with and then maybe China can come in and modernize my region. I want HSR between the major cities around here so I can visit friends more and local trains so I don't have to fucking drive. Each city has middling transit of its own and there is technically a rail line connecting them but it's abysmally slow (worse than driving) and only has 2 departures per day. Meanwhile, tier three cities in China are getting like a hundreds kms of rail built in under 5 years xi-plz

[-] free_casc@hexbear.net 34 points 5 days ago

If you want to will this into reality, it is critical that you educate yourself and those around you about the indigenous history of your land, lest you simply reproduce a settler-colonial entity (but smaller?)

[-] Frogmanfromlake@hexbear.net 28 points 5 days ago

Unfortunately balkanization would most likely end up with more settler colonial countries because respecting the treaties means that the native Americans are getting a lot more land than they’ve been getting.

The US is an intentionally underdeveloped shit hole in a knockoff Gucci belt. The belt was made in China, to the exact low specs as ordered.

Ok well Minnesota can tell them to get the fuck out of their buildings.

Any state can passively withdraw support to federal organisations, and the federal government actually relies of state infrastructure to function.

Let me guess, the whole thing is made up because Tim Walz dared to volunteer to be part of the controlled opposition side…and of course that pathetic wimp is going to lie there and take it.

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 31 points 4 days ago

My bet is that Walz tries as hard as he can to do an Obama by giving a "This is not who we are" speech. It's filled with emotion but it is not impassioned. After all - he needs to appeal "moderate" GOP voters. It's full of soaring yet entirely empty rhetoric. Of course - it has zero actionable plans. In fact - he doesn't even hint at what his state and the dems could do.

Bluesky libs are furious with him so he retreats to Twitter. His Bluesky activity becomes an autopilot afterthought. Some months later he tries to do a Clinton by appearing on a talk show with a winning yet consolatory vibe. Slick Willie was unctuous but he had winning charm and could play the saxophone. Unslick Timmy tries to capture that magic by "surprising" his host by bringing out a melodica and the host - don't you know - asks the audience "Do you wanna hear him play? Dontcha? I do!" Somehow the house band already perfectly knows the parts of the song he plays. It's some current crappy and generic pop hit. He makes a few flubs. The mistakes are supposed to be endearing. The applause is surprisingly tepid.

He says both of his kids love the song. Actually they don't love it at all. It was picked by his consultants as being most "appropriate". His second effort at capturing old-school and dated dem glory is also a big failure. Reddit sleuths discover his kids don't even know the name of the singer they are suppose to love. Walz is roasted all over social media as a ginormous phony. All his social media account posts become mechanical and stale.

Daily he checks in with his consultants who are forced to tell him his metrics are "challenging". They are lying to him and he knows they are but he thanks just the same for every update. His numbers are in the effing toilet! For months on end he is not seen in public anywhere. He's too busy crying into his soup about his nearly non-existent 2028 presidential nom chances. How did thing go so wrong? Why didn't his consultants' advice work? They sure get paid enough - hand-over-fucking-fist.

So all of this, a murder, the ice raids, now people going hungry can be traced back to a youtube video?

[-] GnomeGodsGnomeMasters@hexbear.net 69 points 5 days ago

If by YouTube video, you mean the video of George Floyd being murdered by a cop, then yes. That situation was the beginning of the Trump-Walz vendetta. Then Timmy had to go and run for VP which really pissed Donny off. This whole situation is retribution.

Don’t forget, many people in Trump’s inner circle currently are from Minnesota (Hegseth) and the upper Midwest in general (Noem). Easy for Trump to hit ‘em where it hurts.

[-] buckykat@hexbear.net 63 points 5 days ago

Pretty sure he's talking about that guy who went and tried to walk into a bunch of daycares then decided that since they wouldn't let some random creep in to film the kids they were all secret Somalian fraud rings.

[-] GnomeGodsGnomeMasters@hexbear.net 45 points 5 days ago

Yes, I’m aware, but I’m saying this whole situation traces its history back to several years prior.

Also, I’m of the mind that the kid was paid to make that video and it was used to manufacture consent for what we’re seeing today.

The video was a big turning point, but they had been railing against Minnesota and somalis for a while before that.

[-] GnomeGodsGnomeMasters@hexbear.net 38 points 5 days ago

They’ve been railing against MN since… well, when was the last time MN voted red, Nixon? They’ve been railing against Somalis since Ilhan Omar came on the scene (and was the first national politician to really talk shit about Israel). Laura Loomer, Ali Alexander, and Jacob Wohl went to MPLS ca. 2018/19 and made a “documentary” about her which really put MNs Somali population in the national discourse for the first time.

[-] sewer_rat_420@hexbear.net 32 points 5 days ago

Amazing that they have been working on this so long and the best propaganda they have come up with is a typo on a sign

[-] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 50 points 5 days ago

So the new thing is "everyone I don't like is doing fraud" because they are racist to Somalis?

Just wait until Minnesota nationalizes(?) its farms. Minnesotan SSR 2026 here we come.

[-] RobnHood@hexbear.net 26 points 4 days ago

The technical term would be municipalization, although in the us this can also mean the creation of a sub-county level municipality where their previously was none.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
