We’ve temporarily defederated from Hexbear due to a Lemmy bug with very deeply nested comment threads.

Now I just wait to know the thread it happened in

OUR POSTING CONTINUES TO BE TOO STRONG COMRADES NEVER STOP POSTING

edit: comments are fun, zip ppl are nice comfy

If I had to hazard a guess as to the cause, it's probably some of the mutual aid requests that get posted to incorrect communities, and then get slammed with—

B

U

M

P

I

N

G

T

H

I

S

—where each letter is a new reply to itself. I've seen some go as deep as 200+ comments before the posts are removed.

Here is an example of a post from today in the Games community.

[-] ourtimewillcome@hexbear.net 17 points 5 days ago

I apologize. In the future, I'll check which community these posts are in.

[-] CARCOSA@hexbear.net 29 points 5 days ago

Yes, the ones outside mutual aid are often removed. For what it's worth a single comment spaced out 5 to 10 minutes will keep a post in active sort longer than a single large comment chain made in close succession

[-] ourtimewillcome@hexbear.net 9 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Thank you! I'll adjust my behavior.

I'm really really sorry for causing all those problems, that was definitely not my intention.

Would deleting my account help reduce the strain or would all those comments getting removed only make things worse?

[-] Demigodrick@piefed.zip 10 points 5 days ago

Hey, not your fault, its a bug in the software and i just have to manage it from my side to try and keep the instance as stable as possible. Fingers crossed its resolved quickly by the devs :)

Deleting probably wouldn't help (instances would need to fetch those comments again I think!) But really the bug shouldn't change how you interact with the fediverse, just something we have to temporarily work around!

[-] ourtimewillcome@hexbear.net 5 points 5 days ago

thanks for the kind words! but my approach was ineffective, beyond just being a pain in the ass to deal with. sorry for that.

[-] CARCOSA@hexbear.net 2 points 4 days ago

No need to delete your account, it should be fixed in the next patch and any federated instance can remove a singular post that is causing problems.

[-] microfiche@hexbear.net 33 points 5 days ago

Posting muscles too swoll

[-] gramxi@hexbear.net 45 points 5 days ago

the fact that no other instance triggers this bug is an indictment of them tbh

hexbear is only 1 week away from nuclear nesting

[-] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 17 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

They might just have less RAM or something.

At least it means that the admins checked the logs after thekr instance keeled over.

[-] Poutine@hexbear.net 12 points 4 days ago

(In response to a .world user complaining that .zip should stay defederated)

It’s the myth of consensual ~~sex~~ federation meme, but it’s hexbear, lemmy.zip saying “I consent” and this goober saying “I don’t”

[-] LadyCajAsca@hexbear.net 19 points 5 days ago

we were postmaxxing too much

[-] JustSo@hexbear.net 15 points 5 days ago

Does anyone know which thread caused the issue in particular with the user bumping the thread and repeatedly causing crashes?

Probably wasn't me. sicko-wistful

[-] darkcalling@hexbear.net 13 points 5 days ago

I almost think it has to be the world news mega or another mega.

[-] JustSo@hexbear.net 9 points 5 days ago

The most likely and least funny explanation. shucks.

[-] Frogmanfromlake@hexbear.net 11 points 5 days ago

Seems like it may have been the mutual aid one
