I think the problem is most people suck at driving but they are forced to because there are literally no alternative methods of transportation in like 95% of burgerland. A robust public transit system would do a lot to mitigate this, both tailgaters and tailgatees.

Honestly I find myself saying "I really wish you didn't have to drive" to myself a lot while commuting

[-] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 20 points 1 week ago

If I start thinking that then I start thinking about the kind of life I'd have in a civilized society and it makes me very sad so I don't do that.

[-] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 30 points 1 week ago

There are so many people for which driving is the favorite part of their day.

[-] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 33 points 1 week ago

Many of whom also suck at driving

they think they are "good" at driving because they pass a bunch of cars every time they drive but very few pass them. Mario Kart mentality

Most of my commute is down from the mountainous area of my state, so I don’t mind the windy backroads at all. It kind of does end up being a highlight of my day at Soul Sucking Job LLC.

driving like rallycross is fun, a suburban commute is hell and anyone who genuinely likes that needs reeducation

I love watching tailgating. It's a microcosm for the futility of hyper-individualism.

No, the car in front of you will not de-matrrialize like an ghost if you get behind them long enough. Nor will I. I am in charge of your destiny if not only because you put so much stake in trying to egg me on instead of passing.

I'm not even sure if those kinds of people don't consciously either I swear like 80% if the time someone will tailgate, maybe pass or have the person in front of them change lanes, and then just tailgate the next person

And oh FUCKING man, when you notice someone driving like an ass on the freeway and you pull up 1 car length behind them on an offramp when you just hit the second lane and cruise controlled at 70 the whole time: that shit hits like a drug. Nothing like it.

My favorite is when someone is riding aggressively and tailgating and then try to pass the person they were tailing on the right when there's perfectly clear lanes to the left and I can slow down just enough to block them from being able to get in front of that other car and force them to slow down to get around the car they were tailgating just to pass on the left.

The cyclist anglophone world calls this MGIF-Syndrome: Must get in front.

When everyone is tailgating behind you, the problem in most cases is actually car centric infrastructure and the fact that traffic past a certain density stops behaving like individual motor vehicles and starts to behave like a fluid (similar things go for dense crowds of pedestrians, btw).

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 14 points 1 week ago

People are too selfish to slow down to the speed of the traffic clump and leave some buffer room, but it seriously makes driving on a shitty busy road a lot more bearable.

Tangentially related, but mostly just ventingOh no, I'm leaving at least 3 seconds of space to the car in front of me, the horror! I'm glad you almost got us into a wreck to get ahead of me in tight traffic during rush hour by not using your blinkers. You are now going exactly the same speed you were before, except you are now one car ahead. Stand proud, you're deranged.

[-] NOPper@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 week ago

Recently went on an impromptu road trip across a good chunk of the Western US. Fuck Idaho and Washington drivers. Thought it was just my imagination living out here for so ling but nope, these people just suck extra hard on the road and hate seeing you leave any space at all in front of you if they can squeeze in for a quarter mile then back to their original lane for no reason.

Don't get me started on merging...

I wish people understood that the distance between your car and the one in front of you does not affect your speed at all. Stop tailing people who are stuck behind slowpokes. They can't go any faster and neither can you.

[-] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 21 points 1 week ago

I wish I was attractive in real life as my car is to other cars.

[-] iByteABit@hexbear.net 32 points 1 week ago

Completely antisocial behavior, and it's always the ones with the gigantic SUV that think they've got a right to be driving recklessly just because they can afford a killing machine.

I hate that there's no law enforcement on it while there is on driving a bit over the speed limit on a highway, the first is definitely the more dangerous thing to do, just like the people that cut everyone off by doing reckless zigzags.

I've seen people do this in ways that I would 100% no second thoughts take their license away forever and fine them a crapton if it were up to me, these people should not be given the right to drive their own vehicles if they cannot control themselves and be a normal part of society.

Make them take the bus for life, that way maybe they will grow a social consciousness and see the need for better public transport that everyone benefits from.

[-] whiskers165@hexbear.net 16 points 1 week ago

It's illegal to tailgate in many places. I've seen and heard of many cases of people being ticketed or even arrested if they catch other charges on top of it like using a vehicle as weapon or dangerous/reckless driving. The really bad offenders eventually do get caught even if they are getting away with it 99% of the time. Traffic court is full of these MFers everyday

[-] KoboldKomrade@hexbear.net 32 points 1 week ago

Bro I was going 48 in a 45, on a 2 lane (1 each way) road between 2 parks. Some jackass decided I wasn't going fast enough so they passed me. Immediately caught up to them at the light like 1/10th a mile later. People do not understand safety, speed, driving, etc.

[-] DornerStan@lemmygrad.ml 18 points 1 week ago

You could make a drinking game out of "meeting the person that aggressively passed you at the next stop light"

[-] SchillMenaker@hexbear.net 23 points 1 week ago

And there's a solid chance that they're already playing a drinking game.

Saw 95 comments in this post and was like oh no struggle sesh but very relieved to open it and see it's just everyone piling on cars and aggro drivers wholesome

[-] DornerStan@lemmygrad.ml 28 points 1 week ago

Rule of thumb: I'm gonna go as slow as I want 😎

[-] DornerStan@lemmygrad.ml 20 points 1 week ago

Both time to react and impact absorbed by your brain and body are highly dependent on velocity. Cars should not be going faster than 70 mph. The only reason speed limits allow it is carbrain lobbying.

[-] whiskers165@hexbear.net 15 points 1 week ago

Driving less than 70 mph on a highway in the Atlanta metro will have people angrily tailgating you and aggressively passing in the right lane.

[-] DornerStan@lemmygrad.ml 15 points 1 week ago

Yeah that's been true in every state I've driven in. Statesians are hopelessly carbrained.

I tailgate so I can pretend I'm actually in a train

Edit: this is a joke, I don't even own a car lol

[-] 7bicycles@hexbear.net 15 points 1 week ago

somewhat sympathetic but please still don't

Whenever I play never have I ever, I always use "never have I ever driven over 80mph" as an easy out, loads of fingers go down.

Totally makes up for it when statements about butt stuff come up and I get out.

Not defending it, but this is how it works. Legally, if this is the case, you are in the wrong. You must match the flow of traffic. A lot of driving is being able to assume what another car is doing and what it's going to do. If you are going slower than what other expect, you are making the road less safe for everyone.

This is obviously an enormous issue with driving, and limits the transportation ability of the disabled and the elderly.

you are the traffic

[-] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 16 points 1 week ago

If you're in front of a line of cars you may well be the cause of a traffic jam that lasts for an hour tbh.

Na, I just tip the break pedal for a second to light the break-lights, which reliably will convert my tailgater to the problem again.

If you drive lightly, you can extend part and vehicle life like 200% or more.
