Official covid policy - Wholesale slaughter of the poor and vulnerable

Official palestine policy - wholesale slaughter of the poor and vulnerable

Not that fucking hard, Nate, even if you did probably just pull the "correlation" out of your ass.

[-] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 36 points 1 year ago

I was going to phrase it mildly as "caring about people regardless of their station in life" but yeah.

[-] MF_COOM@hexbear.net 65 points 1 year ago

What's a covid hawk Nate? Hey! Come back! I said what's a covid hawk mother fucker!??

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 66 points 1 year ago

Wearing a mask to the grocery store is basically a declaration of war on neoliberalism 😎

[-] muad_dibber@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 1 year ago

You're telling me I don't have the freedom to spread plagues to strangers if I want to?? This is worse than prison.

[-] zifnab25@hexbear.net 32 points 1 year ago

What's a covid hawk Nate?

I've always read them as falcons that cannot hear the falconer.

He means people who supported public safety measures

people who wanted covid policies to remain in place past initial vaccinations / thought we should be taking covid seriously past the point where the admin declared covid as over.

i.e. "we should keep people from dying of covid"

[-] betelgeuse@hexbear.net 57 points 1 year ago

Americans were almost in danger of "the state" making them wear a piece of fabric over their face and they will never forgive anyone for it. Most of the whiners were never actually forced to do it they just wish they were. They'll also tell you how the entire country was shut down for weeks despite it never happening anywhere, even in very blue states. There was the magical time when, just for a few weeks, nobody cared about masks because the Koch media machine hadn't formed a proper stance on it yet. Then the libertarian brainworms kicked in and gave everyone a hot cultural issue to be mad about. Because letting the government tell people to wear masks could lead to telling multi-billion dollar corporations to do stuff. Every public solution must be opposed at every level, no matter how benign because any quarter given is weakness.

[-] duderium@hexbear.net 46 points 1 year ago

“Why these positions are related”—some people care more about human life than capital. People with less money tend to be on the left while people with more tend to be on the right. Having a shitload of money enables you to hire goons to enforce your fucked up system. Problem solved.

This bozo projecting that Trump/Hilary wasn't as much of a slam dunk as liberal press thought really did overinflate his head

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 30 points 1 year ago

If hell is real and I have to go there - all the devil needs to do to torture me is have Nate Silver read his tweets at me for all of eternity in his ordinary speaking voice. By about the third day - I'd be losing my mind and eternity is a bit longer than that.

[-] emizeko@hexbear.net 19 points 1 year ago

if I listened to Nate Silver drone for a week I'd come out like the kid from "The Jaunt"

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 17 points 1 year ago

I've never heard him speak at length but I'm convinced his conversations/interviews are probably pretty boring. I think he's really his best self (so to speak) when he tweets. I'm convinced he carefully crafts them to be as annoying and as smug as possible. He does a fantastic job.

[-] ferralcat 4 points 1 year ago

I used to listen to his podcast a lot during the 2020 election. He's... Fine. It's interesting to hear about the polls, but also i realized it was a worthless waste of time feeding my anxiety. I was generally a less happy person from listening to it.

I don't really get this tweet though. He's just saying "there are different groups of democrats"? Like the 2016 or 2020 primaries didn't already show us that? Or are they just trying to stir up tension between the two to drive clicks?

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 4 points 1 year ago

For him - politics is just like sports. He's saying that leftists like us want the war to end because our team wants the lib team to lose. That's a moronic take but that's basically it.

Or are they just trying to stir up tension between the two to drive clicks?

In the self text I said he's trolling but he's also 100% a ghoul. Also - people like him are slippery fuckers. He wants a very high level of engagement but he takes care not to get ratioed. He never states things plainly so even though he clearly implies stuff - he can always claim "I didn't say that."

He loves to push people's buttons. Another example is he keeps mentioning Biden's polling weaknesses and the possibility of Biden getting replaced. That's Silver's standard operating procedure. He's just a numbers guy and the numbers tell him there's a possibility.

It must make most earnest libs who follow him batty. I wonder if they actually reply to him with stuff like "But Nate are you actually saying Biden should be replaced?" Should is a modal verb and Numbers Nate didn't use one.

[-] frauddogg@lemmygrad.ml 32 points 1 year ago

Man, anything but an admission that for a not-insignificant chunk of the country, LITERAL FUCKING GENOCIDE is a non-starter, huh, Third-Way Nate?

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 30 points 1 year ago

We'd say the contradictions have been heightened. It's easier for soft leftists to identify liberals as their enemies. So... he's kinda right? 😕

[-] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 27 points 1 year ago

Nate Bronze being downgraded to Nate Wood with this one.

Yeah, it's true. Genocide doesn't poll that well. However...

Fucking number genius fried his brain so hard with studying US electoralism that he thinks an 80/20 split is "dividing a coalition in half".

[-] RonPaulyShore@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

not sure he's got the bad take. biden's approval tanked when he turned tail in afghanistan, and he's down less than a point since october 7.

the people love occupation.

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 9 points 1 year ago

The main reason people are supposed to vote for Biden is that the other guy is clearly worse. Nate Numbers has a ethic-free and morality-free take where the inputs only account for the near term. That's very convenient for him. War is war after all and he can say "I'm just a numbers guy. Biden was polling well up until..."

I don't think anybody reading this thinks the war will end in the next few days. Anything might happen and if it does end - Biden's supporters along with Nate Numbers can say what a wise elder statesman Biden is and they can tell us toldja. But Israel has no plan other than "defeat Hamas". If they go through with destroying Hamas - that's insane. Just for example they want to kill 1/3rd of Hamas - that's ~10,000 fighters. That would be roughly ~100,000 people killed in total which is 5% of Gaza's total population.

It's a fool's errand to guess what Hezbollah will do as the body count grows into mountains of corpses. Still - I think after 20,000 to 40,000 killed in Gaza (1% to 2%) - Israel and the US risks Hezbollah's involvement despite the US making it clear that will lead to destruction and devastation in Lebanon. Beyond that scenario is the horrorshow of a regional war where Iran gets involved too.

Let's imagine Israel actually plans to kill 30,000 people in total of which ~3,000 fighters. What does Israel do after that? Nearly everybody in entire strip will be displaced, the vast majority will be destitute, and - I dunno - ~80+% of homes destroyed. I think the only plan Israel has in this "limited" war scenario is ethnic cleansing. Pushing Gazans into Egypt because Big Daddy USA bribes Egypt by cancelling their debt and giving them other monies. I'm no pollster but I don't think the ethnic cleansing of 2,000,000 people that's started before the election will be good for Biden.

i appreciate your comment and thinking -- a good exploration of the conflict. though i think it's still compatible with not unreasonable, incredibly cynical political calculation. by coming out strongly for israel, biden shores up the suburbs and donors (yes, at the risk of progressive enthusiasm), and he hopes the conflict ends soon. but if it doesn't, public opinion continues to shift, he can pin the blunders/horrors on bibi and counsel moderation on the issue going forward (trump, even the maverick that he is, will not be able to outflank him; the GOP is too thoroughly invested in the cultural atmospherics of the zionist project). middle east catastrophe doesn't matter to voters, just as ukraine/russian catastrophe doesn't matter; these are complicated, intractable issues of alien, inscrutable peoples, and as long as american boys aren't over there, and as long as americans aren't fleeing in choppers, no one cares, and Biden will not be seen as holding the bag.

really, by giving bibi a blank cheque for terror-violence, biden's allowed public opinion to shift in such a way that the GOP will not be able to take advantage; had Biden positioned himself such that he tempered Israeli objectives and prevented much of the indiscriminate terror-violence, then Biden takes the heat for being squishy and a bad friend to jews, and israeli isn't empowered to incredible evil and the public-opinion on zionism remains at status quo ante. i think biden's polling is a disaster there, and calls to replace him become seriously considered.

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 3 points 1 year ago

If Hezbollah doesn't get involved and in the mind of Americans this war remains a "low-level" conflict which is an obscene but useful phrase to use - I see the logic in what you're saying. But I entirely disagree with you if Hezbollah gets involved. At that point the carnage will be happening in at least three places - Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon. I'm no armchair military strategist and I have no knowledge of what Iran can do indirectly. But it doesn't seem crazy to me that if Hezbollah is at war - Iran uses proxies so they have deniability to kill Americans soldiers and more than one at a time. A handful at a time? More?

I didn't even mention the West Bank which Americans have been basically entirely ignoring. It's a low-level conflict but I wonder for how much longer. If Hezbollah is at war - the West Bank explodes. And there it won't just be Israeli soldiers killing Palestinians. The settlers in the West Bank will watch rockets hitting the heart of Israel - they'll go on murderous rampages. Images of Jewish settlers killing Palestinians doing pogroms will be on American tv news. Americans will learn definitions of "pogrom" and the murders can hardly be pushed away with phrases like "The IDF is the world's most moral army". The IDF will be complicit in murder to a degree I don't think the average American can ignore. Maybe even boomers start to learn the meme "Are we the baddies?"

[-] GarbageShoot@hexbear.net 23 points 1 year ago

So many libs in the comments wringing their hands about how slaughtering children "needs to be done" because "war is vile but sometimes necessary"

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 18 points 1 year ago

"war is vile but sometimes necessary"

But if you ask them if they'd support affordable housing built in their neighborhood - they act like it's a form of ethnic cleansing. "I mean - sure I'm for it. But not right here. We have lots of families here. And there are property values to consider."

[-] barrbaric@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago

And yet somehow communist revolution in the US is unthinkable. No war of liberation, only war of occupation.

[-] GarbageShoot@hexbear.net 9 points 1 year ago

These are self-identifying liberals, I don't really expect them to support revolt

[-] Frogmanfromlake@hexbear.net 9 points 1 year ago

That "this is war" nonsense is only applied when whites are the aggressors. They definitely weren't saying that on October 7th.

[-] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 23 points 1 year ago

What the ever living fuck does COVID have to with a genocidal war? Is silver-legion invested in COVID as a Chinese bio weapon brainworms?

Maybe it's closer to scratch a LIB and a frothingfash bleeds?

[-] BeanBoy@hexbear.net 17 points 1 year ago

Nate silver is stuck in early-2010’s and still thinks Freakonomics-style unexpected (and ultimately not even real) correlations is a substitute for politics

[-] Frogmanfromlake@hexbear.net 14 points 1 year ago

This is why humanities are essential for an education

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 8 points 1 year ago

But Nate Silver says he's very much not a ghoul, the humanities are unneeded, and he can prove it with math!
