The death of Zionism has just massively accelerated.

previous preamble

BRICS has expanded to include Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Argentina is currently experiencing technical difficulties due to the election of the ancap clown Milei - once he's out of office, maybe they can try again.

I don't really have much to say about this one way or another. BRICS has, so far, made only nervous and small steps towards challenging US hegemony. This isn't really that unexpected, as only China and Russia are the real "true believers" in ending US hegemony (and even then, China's government either believes, or is pretending to believe, that reconciliation is still possible). Brazil, India, and South Africa are less enthralled by the concept of dethroning the US, most especially India, who had to make a firm decision in 2023 whether they were going to be on the side of America, or on the side of the Global South, and chose the former, strengthening their military relationship. They're still best of friends with Russia, but they are very obviously the sussy imposter of the BRICS group.

The prospects of BRICS are only really loosely correlated with the prospects of multipolarism, though. It's not a process that hinges on BRICS's successes or failures. It is coming because the contender states (in Desai's terminology) are irreversibly rising, and the US is irreversibly falling. If it will not be BRICS that leads, it will be a different organization. A better world is not only possible, but inevitable - unfortunately for the US.

I'm taking a week off the updates because I've been swamped lately, and also feel the need to reconfigure (and find new) sources. Needless to say that I've grown tired of Financial Times headlines, even if they do represent the actual views of the bourgeoisie.

The Country of the Week is Ethiopia! Feel free to chime in with books, essays, longform articles, even stories and anecdotes or rants. More detail here.

Last week's thread is here.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

UNRWA daily-ish reports on Israel's destruction and siege of Gaza and the West Bank.

English-language Palestinian Marxist-Leninist twitter account. Alt here.
English-language twitter account that collates news (and has automated posting when the person running it goes to sleep).
Arab-language twitter account with videos and images of fighting.
English-language (with some Arab retweets) Twitter account based in Lebanon. - Telegram is @IbnRiad.
English-language Palestinian Twitter account which reports on news from the Resistance Axis. - Telegram is @EyesOnSouth.
English-language Twitter account in the same group as the previous two. - Telegram here.

English-language PalestineResist telegram channel.
More telegram channels here for those interested.

Various sources that are covering the Ukraine conflict are also covering the one in Palestine, like Rybar.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful. Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Oh my god. Yeah, America screwed up big time with their airstrikes. If you can get Alhazmi to hate you, then you're truly lost. This guy is a long time affiliate of the US-backed Islah party. He joins the dozens of other nominally US-backed officials condemning the strikes. QRT: https://nitter.net/Mp_M_Alhazmi/status/1745642474440118577#m

If America wanted to achieve the complete and near-total unity of the Yemeni people, they have surely succeeded.

"Our disagreement with the Houthis will not make us Zionists. We will set aside the past and unite for what is to come. Our rifles beside the Houthis' rifles. We endorse all options in responding to the American and British aggression. We bear the full consequences of supporting the Palestinians. By Allah, we will not sleep while the children of Gaza are under bombardment. Those of us who die become martyrs, and those who live remain honorable." Namibia, which suffered genocide at the hands of Germany in the 20th century, criticizes German support for Israel

"Namibia rejects Germany's support for the genocidal designs of the racist Israeli state against innocent civilians in Gaza."

"On Namibian soil, Germany committed the first genocide of the 20th century in 1904-1908, in which tens of thousands of innocent Namibians died under the most inhuman and brutal conditions. The German government has still not fully expiated its guilt for the genocide it committed on Namibian soil. Therefore, in light of Germany's inability to learn lessons from its horrific history, President Hage Geingob expresses deep concern at the shocking decision communicated by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany yesterday, January 12, 2024, in which it rejected the morally correct accusation presented by South Africa before the International Court of Justice that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza."

"It is disturbing that, ignoring the violent deaths of more than 23,000 Palestinians in Gaza and several UN reports that disturbingly highlight the internal displacement of 85% of civilians in Gaza amid acute shortages of food and essential services, the German government has chosen to defend in the International Court of Justice the horrific and genocidal acts of the Israeli government against innocent civilians in Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Territories."

"Germany cannot morally express commitment to the UN Convention against genocide, including atonement for the genocide in Namibia, while supporting the equivalent of a holocaust and genocide in Gaza. Several international organizations, such as Human Rights Watch, have chillingly concluded that Israel is committing war crimes in Gaza."

"President Geingob reiterates his appeal made on December 31, 2023: "No peace-loving human being can ignore the carnage waged against the Palestinians in Gaza". In this regard, President Geingob calls on the German government to reconsider its ill-timed decision to intervene as a third party in the defense and support of Israel's genocidal acts before the International Court of Justice."

Argentina’s annual inflation soared to 211.4% in 2023, the highest rate in 32 years and highest in the world, surpassing Venezuela, according to figures released Thursday by the government’s INDEC statistics agency.

The annual inflation compared with about 95% in 2022. The country’s monthly inflation stood at 25.5% in December, up from 12.8% in November, but slightly below the 30% the government had forecast.

Milei had said in an interview with a Buenos Aires radio station before the figures were released that if the monthly inflation rate came in below the forecast, that would be an accomplishment.

“If the number is closer to 25%, it means that the success was tremendous,” Milei said.

In his inauguration speech, Milei announced a painful adjustment plan aimed at staving off hyperinflation and warned that the measures would initially have a “negative impact on the level of activity, employment, real wages, and the number of poor and indigent people.” It is estimated that around 40% of the population live in poverty.

To fight hyperinflation, hyperinflation is necessary. As the inflation is higher than ever before, it is a tremendous success.

Another day, another wave of demonstrations. Several major chokepoints in and around Manhattan were shut down this morning, including the Holland Tunnel, Brooklyn Bridge, Williamsburg Bridge, and Manhattan Bridge. Twitter / Nitter.

This is pretty huge as far as NYC demonstrations go. At best, Occupy Wall Street shut down just the Brooklyn Bridge one time. NYC demonstrators have been wrecking havok for months now. I can't even imagine how much these simultaneous closures fucked up traffic. Perhaps only Chris Christie has done it better.

There are a lot of people who are red, mad, and nude online about it.

In Democracy and Rules-Based-International-Order news, China is subverting Taiwanese democracy by reducing the barrier for Taiwanese citizens in China to return to Taiwan to vote

spoilerBeijing is facing accusations of interference in Taiwan's upcoming election, with Chinese government-owned airlines offering heavily discounted flights to help people return to the island to vote.

Some say the initiative aims to maximise the participation of as many pro-Beijing Taiwanese as possible in the upcoming election.

An official document obtained by the ABC reveals that the discounts are exclusively for Taiwanese residents in mainland China.

In Taiwan elections, voters are required to cast their ballots in person, with no provisions for postal voting for those living overseas.

Flights on 10 airlines, mostly Chinese government-owned, are being discounted by as much as 70 per cent in a promotion initiated by the Association of Taiwan Investment Enterprises on the Mainland (ATIEM), a group linked to China's Taiwan Office.

"The ATIEM is a united front organisation that helps China mobilise Taiwanese business groups," the think tank Taiwan Economic Democracy Union wrote in a statement.

"Beijing obviously has great influence over it.

"If Taipei lets the ATIEM assist Taiwanese business groups to return for voting with cheaper air tickets, it is letting the Chinese Communist Party intervene in Taiwan's election."

The think tank is calling on authorities to prevent political interference from Beijing and to investigate suspicions of election bribery.

Although it's speculated the flight deals are aimed at voters favouring a pro-Beijing candidate, China has not responded to the criticisms.

The ABC has contacted the Chinese embassy for comment, but hasn't received a reply.

At a recent press conference, ATIEM's president Lee Cheng-Hung estimated nearly 80 per cent of Taiwanese in the mainland were expected to vote in the election.

"Taiwanese businesspeople have a strong desire to return to Taiwan to vote now," Mr Lee said.

"They all hope to exercise their rights so that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait can break away from the danger of war and call for continuous exchanges and mutual benefits."

Kelly Chow, a 55-year-old entrepreneur in trade living in Shanghai, purchased her round-trip tickets to Taipei for RMB1,200 ($250), a price that is almost half the usual cost.

"With the looming economic [downturn] and the expense of a family of four departing, this is a pretty good deal for us," Ms Chow told the ABC.

"The election is a very important democratic activity and we would like to take our children back to experience it so that they will be so proud.

"I certainly hope that the new government can do better in trade between the mainland and Taiwan."

On January 13, voters will be choosing between continuing with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party or a change to an opposition party that is more friendly towards Beijing – either the Kuomintang or the Taiwan People's Party.

"It's hard to tell that if they buy the discounted tickets for the election, they are going to vote for the more pro-Beijing candidate," said Dr Kuo Mei-fen, a Taiwanese lecturer at Macquarie University.

"However, because their life and networks are established in China, their perspectives on China will be relatively different from the general public in Taiwan."

Taiwan considers itself a democracy, though Taipei has never formally declared independence, while China considers Taiwan one of its provinces.

(rest of article not included)

Interfering in democracy is when you make it easier for legitimate voters to participate in elections

I wasn't quite sure where to put this so figured it may get some visibility here.

https://www.icc-cpi.int/news/icc-prosecutor-karim-aa-khan-kc-announces-launch-advanced-evidence-submission-platform-otplink

The ICC has opened up a portal for people to submit evidence of Israeli war crimes. Yes the ICC is a paper tiger and lib, but having internationally documented and recognized evidence of Israeli war crimes is a good thing. I know we have this thread documenting their war crimes but if there happen to be any Palestinians lurking here and/or witnesses to these crimes, this may be an opportunity for you to officially submit your evidence of Israeli war crimes.

I'm seeing some back and forth on Twitter about who can/should submit so I'm just deferring to what @JFAorg is urging on Twitter (just Palestinian families so as to not clog the submissions with wrong/ill-formatted data). But maybe that will change? Also, I don't know if Justice for All is a legit org.

Direct Submission Link on the ICC site: https://otplink.icc-cpi.int/

Video about submitting evidence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZjHgYto83s

Justice for All Submission Link: https://www.justiceforall.org/icc-submissions/

It should be noted that the ICC is different from ICJ (where South Africa is planning to submit a claim of genocide). AFAIK, ICC is people vs states and ICJ is states vs states. Anyone else have any thoughts or anything to add?

Lula, Petro, and Arab League declare support to South Africa’s case against Israel

Colombia and Brazil join a growing list of countries that has expressed support for South Africa’s case accusing Israel of genocide

Colombia and Brazil’s foreign ministries announced in separate statements that their governments support South Africa’s historic case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over the ongoing genocide in Gaza. The two South American nations join a growing list of countries that have saluted South Africa’s initiative to demonstrate that Israel has violated its obligations under the Geneva Convention and oblige the state to cease all such acts.

Colombia’s foreign ministry wrote in a statement that “South Africa’s lawsuit is a brave step in the right direction.” It added that the government of Gustavo Petro hopes that “the Court will rule without delay on the request for the urgent provisional measures requested by South Africa and adopt decisions that will allow the bloodbath in Gaza and the occupied territories to cease.”

The statement also pointed out that Colombia’s president, Gustavo Petro, has sustained since Israel intensified its siege on Gaza, that, “it is very clear that the actions and measures adopted by the government of Israel constitute acts of genocide.”

Itamaraty announced the support of the Brazilian government in a statement following a meeting held between Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Palestinian Ambassador in Brazil, Ibrahim Alzeben. The statement read: “In light of the flagrant violations of international humanitarian law, the president expressed his support for the initiative of South Africa to ask the International Court of Justice to determine that Israel immediately cease all acts and measures that could constitute genocide or related crimes in the terms of the Convention for the Prevention and Repression of Genocide Crime.”

Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary General of the Arab League, announced on the same day that “It is natural and logical for the Arab League to fully support the lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel before the International Court of Justice on charges of committing genocide. We look forward to a just and bold ruling that will stop this aggressive war and put an end to the shedding of Palestinian blood.”

The leader of the regional bloc added, “I express gratitude to South Africa and its government for adopting this principled stance, prioritizing morals and human values over any other considerations… and I reaffirm the Secretary General’s support for South Africa’s efforts in every possible manner.”

South Africa submitted the 84-page application on December 29, the 84th day of the Israel’s bombardment of the besieged Strip. In the document, South Africa emphasizes the obligation of all State Parties to the 1948 Convention to take “all reasonable measures within their power to prevent genocide”. As such, it has urged the Court to recognize that Israel has breached this obligation.

Citing Article II of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, it argues, “The acts and omissions by Israel…are genocidal in character because they are intended to bring about the destruction of a substantial part of the Palestinian national, racial, and ethnic group.”

South Africa will present its arguments before 15 judges of the ICJ on January 11.

Israel, after supporting Bolsonaro and sending its diplomat to try to sabotage the Brazilian Air Force mission to rescue Brazilian-Palestinians from Gaza, really thought that Brazil would remain neutral?

We need Gustavo Petro emojis.
