If only there was some way to completely prevent this from happening...

Sure, I could be part of the solution, But what's in it for ME exclusively?!

I'd rather get sick, or make a lot of people sick, than cooperate with others. I derive my self-worth from how badly others are losing so I can feel like a winner, so it's against my interests to prevent others from from getting sick!

Maybe not "average", but an unfortunate growing number :(

I found out a couple years ago then I have no measles immunity. I'm not vaccinated because my mother never had had me get vaccinated when I was a child (I'm 56yo now.) She lied on my school records and made up random dates off the top of her head filling out school paperwork. Nobody cared back in the 1970's and 80's and we moved a lot.

To get the measles vaccination now will cost over $100, my insurance won't pay for it. I hope that I can come up with the money at some point and pay for it there is always something else that I need to spend that money on.

Uh, bro... not only is a measles vaccine more necessary than most of the shit you have, I guarantee you can get it covered by insurance as a "preventative measure". Vaccines are free.

You do not want the measles. Not only has it killed millions of people, it can put you in the hospital which is much more expensive than a shot. You can lose your job and a ton of money.

This is possibly more important than car insurance or groceries. You can bum some groceries from the food pantry or from your friends. You can't get this immunity anywhere else.

It's worse than that. Measles resets your immune system.

So not only are they going to get sick at 56yo, but all that built up immune memory will be gone. You don't want to be going into that at that age.

I have tried three times to get the measles vaccine and my insurance refuses.

[-] KevonLooney@lemm.ee 1 points 10 months ago

You need to ask them why they aren't in compliance:

https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/adults/pay-for-vaccines.html

Or just get a different company.

Thank you. I have Medicaid... this is very wrong then that I keep getting denied. My doctor has even sent the pharmacy an order twice and they deny it. I'm 56 yrs old with some health issues. I'll ask the health department what I can do.

[-] dmtalon@infosec.pub 6 points 10 months ago

That's crazy... And sad, however not surprising insurance doesn't cover it...

Average? 81% of Americans have received at least one vaccine dose for covid. So we're ostensibly talking about ~19% of Americans being assholes.

[-] athos77@kbin.social 3 points 10 months ago

Measles is still pretty common in parts of the Middle East, Africa and Asia. From the timing, an infected person came in on an overseas flight at Dulles and took a domestic flight at National the next day.

[-] Empricorn@feddit.nl 11 points 10 months ago

What's your point? It's preventable. I got a MMR shot as a child and now I never have to worry about this horrible disease. In the context of what you replied to, your comment makes no sense.

[-] dan1101@lemm.ee 1 points 10 months ago

Apparently people that are highly allergic to eggs can't get the vaccine.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago

Okay, now imagine if everyone else got vaccinated.

That's 3 different locations I've seen measles exposure reports from.
Wouldn't that be a hell of a thing? For WW3 to pop off just as a massive outbreak of measles sweeps the United States? Election super spreader events coming up this year too. Chance for a good bit of civil unrest.
2024 has the potential to be Chinese curse kinds of interesting.

With America this cursed you would think it's built on Native American burial grounds.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

Well it's taken Tecumseh long enough already.

[-] TransplantedSconie@lemm.ee 4 points 10 months ago
