It was disheartening to see these two places when I was traveling especially since local eats were better and cheaper.

It's a bit of a status symbol + they are way better in Asia. Some of them like Pizza Huts are straight up European sit downs

I was in Peru when they opened the first BK and McDonalds then subway and Taco Bell and going there was like some fancy event that only upper class people did

There were so many in Prague and Budapest. I guess I was used the McDs being everywhere but Starbucks is even more ubiquitous. Really a shame because their coffee is trash

That shit is insane to me. There was this small local burger restaurant where I live that served cheap but much better quality food compared to the local McShits and the portions they served were a lot larger too. However they went out of business eventually because most people for some reason rather eat American slop.

I think that these companies in certain areas definitely have cachet due to their American-ness but also they sell addictive food in potentially larger quantities than others.
