so.

what is the context to that? anyone know? I could imagine a bout of some food poisoning or something affecting the ship.

I don't know about this quote specificly, but Darwin spent almost 10 years working on barnacles to establish himself and came to hate them. It was supposed to be a quick detour before releasing 'On the Origin of Species'. During that time he made a lot of similar statements.

[-] Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works 51 points 11 months ago

Those things have a tendency to stick around hey

[-] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 35 points 11 months ago

10 years... of barnacles.

yeah. I'd hate my life too.

[-] Chestnut@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

The history of Darwin's Barnacles is fascinating https://youtu.be/plYuvU2VZkE?si=Xq6rwC8FdhXFBDYD

At the time barnacles represented a major taxonomic mystery. They have a bizarre lifecycle that baffled scientists and figuring out what they were related to was baffling

Reminds me of the Onion video about the man who wasted his life studying anteaters: https://youtu.be/qXD9HnrNrvk?si=x3vd96q2BzMRFAnA

I assumed it was something more inconsequential and personal. It's the sort of thing I usually say after doing something particularly embarrassing that I can't get out of my head...

[-] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago

Oh, there’s a lot things it could have been.

Late night caused by the guy next door getting drunk and trying his hand at singing opera.

Getting rejected because barnacles reek;

Finding out the rum is gone…

Why is it always?

[-] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

Where are you getting anything about a ship?

[-] threelonmusketeers@sh.itjust.works 11 points 11 months ago

Darwin is well known for his voyage on the HMS Beagle, but there is no mention of that in the post.

[-] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

Right exactly. Wondered if it was just an assumption or if I missed something

[-] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

It was an assumption,

[-] tahoe@lemmy.world 37 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

I think I need subtitles for his handwriting

[-] photonic_sorcerer@lemmy.dbzer0.com 30 points 11 months ago

Lucky for you they're included in the image

[-] MisterNeon@lemmy.world 35 points 11 months ago

Can anyone read his handwriting?

[-] Artyom@lemm.ee 39 points 11 months ago

That's how you know he was a scientist.

[-] EvacuateSoul@lemmy.world 16 points 11 months ago

I do like the abbreviated ''very''.

Doctor Darwin, I presume. It almost looks like every medical prescription I've ever gotten.

[-] Dirk@lemmy.ml 15 points 11 months ago

I feel you, Charles. I feel you!

[-] marcos@lemmy.world 11 points 11 months ago

If you compare "rough weeks" with Darwin, I guess 99.99% of the population will discover they are extremely happy.

[-] vzq@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 11 months ago

Yeah that tracks.

[-] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago
[-] bloubz@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 11 months ago

Name something more US than nickname Chuck for Charles

[-] Sotuanduso@lemm.ee 1 points 11 months ago

Double quarter pounder cheeseburger.

[-] bloubz@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 11 months ago

We wouldn't get it in France

[-] dantheclamman@lemmy.world 6 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

The backstory is that he wrote it in a letter to Charles Lyell, and also used the opportunity to rant about how much he hated orchids

(During grad school, I had this quote printed on my office wall because I identified with it)

[-] Mindhunter@lemmy.today 5 points 11 months ago

Wait no one understands my hand righting either

[-] anarchyrabbit@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago
