I read through twice, but unless I missed an instance— "Negro" is not the N-word.
It is a dated slur. It is one of the forms of the N-word.
The Chinese didn’t mean it as a slur back then since it was a common word to refer to black people, but nowadays, it is a slur.
Important context here is that it was not considered a slur at the time.
the CW is probably still warranted but I wouldn't say that it's THE N-word
As I mentioned previously: It is a dated slur. It is one of the forms of the N-word.
The Chinese didn’t mean it as a slur back then since it was a common word to refer to black people, but nowadays, it is a slur.
Locking this thread due to pedantic debate pervertism. Do not equate these two words, it's not the same as the N-word and addressing it as such can be seen as unintentionally undermining the historical significance of the actual N-word in question.
I forget which book of his, but Losurdo describes how during the war on Korea, as part of the "indoctrination" of captured US soldiers, they would just show them a map of US military bases in SE Asia. Most of them were stunned because they had no idea, and would sympathize with not wanting foreign military bases right on your borders.
I guarantee most anglos have no idea the sheer scale and number of US military bases outside their own borders.
Meanwhile the PSAs at home

In case you don't know, negro means black in Spanish
Are we really, on hexbear, pretending that "Negro" is not a slur in American English in 2024. What are we doing here
True, but it was also the preferred term used by anti-imperialist black leaders for most of the 20th century. Read anything by WEB Dubois, Malcolm X, Robeson, Nkrumah, MLK, etc.
"One of the reasons that it is bad for us to continue to just refer to ourselves as the so-called Negro, that's negative. When we say so-called Negro that's pointing out what we aren't, but it isn't telling us what we are. We are Africans, and we happen to be in America. We are not Americans. We are a people who formerly were Africans who were kidnaped and brought to America. Our forefathers weren't the Pilgrims. We didn't land on Plymouth Rock; the rock was landed on us. We were brought here against our will; we were not brought here to be made citizens. We were not brought here to enjoy the constitutional gifts that they speak so beautifully about today. Because we weren't brought here to be made citizens--today, now that we've become awakened to some degree, and we begin to ask for those things which they say are supposedly for all Americans, they look upon us with a hostility and unfriendliness" -Malcolm X
Yep, but it is a dated slur in English . Poison means fish in French, but that doesn’t apply to English.
Is black a slur?
I wonder if anybody actually took these words to heart...
N-word aside (which I believe the usage was common at the time so we could excuse it?), that's one increadibly based leaflet.
But at the same time, I imagine it wouldn't be a good idea for black soldiers to defect in the middle of the conflict.
~~How is literally every comment on this about how "Negro" is not the N-Word, how is that the only thing people are talking about.~~ All but one
because censoring negro in a historical document is the height of silliness and clickbaity.
Seriously, like are we gonna put a CW on the "I Have a Dream" speech?
EXACTLY! what are we doing here people??
