anakin-padme-2 At least he'll face charges for negligent discharge in a public building

[-] FnordPrefect@hexbear.net 50 points 2 years ago

when his gun went off

NYT really putting the ASS in passive voice

[-] Rom@hexbear.net 20 points 2 years ago

They used active voice in the title at least, even if they are trying to pass it off as """accidental"""

[-] happybadger@hexbear.net 46 points 2 years ago

Negligently. It's a crime during the hysteria the New York Times stoked by publishing atrocity porn without any editorial oversight. I've handled several dozen guns and have yet to find one I could accidentally fire. Only willful criminal negligence about the most basic gun safety rules makes a gun go off unintentionally.

[-] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 32 points 2 years ago

You have to be really fucking up to negligent discharge. Guarantee this cop fuckup had his finger in the trigger well while drawing it. Pity he didn't blow his femoral and off his useless self

[-] CoolerOpposide@hexbear.net 44 points 2 years ago

If I accidentally broke the office coffee pot I might get fired. Insane that the best police officer gets to have 1000 infractions that would get the average employee fired anywhere else. Literally our worst and dimmest

[-] Maoo@hexbear.net 44 points 2 years ago

Guns don't go off accidentally unless it's by a child that doesn't know better.

[-] Outdoor_Catgirl@hexbear.net 24 points 2 years ago

Or a shitty gun. Surely the billions of dollars of police money buys them good quality guns, right?

[-] Maoo@hexbear.net 43 points 2 years ago

Cops pretty much always carry Glocks.

Glocks have a trigger safety that prevents them from firing when dropped or otherwise abused but make it very easy to begin firing without thinking.

Cops prefer this setup because they're lazy cruel cowards that want as little between them and filling a kid with bullets as possible.

But they don't fire accidentally.

[-] PorkrollPosadist@hexbear.net 27 points 2 years ago

The NYPD in particular uses custom-ordered glocks which require increased trigger pressure to fire.

[-] Maoo@hexbear.net 14 points 2 years ago

I think they went back on that because they were too frustrated at not being able to jump straight to killing people quite as easily.

There are absolutely videos of cop weapons going off by accident. This is the sig sauer going off in holster: https://youtu.be/OSAI_HUZDI0

[-] Maoo@hexbear.net 9 points 2 years ago

You can see the cop pull his hand right by the trigger when it goes off. He's either wearing a holster that doesn't protect the trigger (negligent) or isn't wearing it correctly (negligent).

[-] Awoo@hexbear.net 2 points 2 years ago

This gun has numerous reports of going off, and also had a redesign because it would go off when dropped as well. I don't think he touched it at all. It's a shit gun.

Now I'm not saying that's definitely the case with this gun but it's worth knowing about this as it will come up every time this happens in future.

Or a cop looking to incite violence from panicked protesters that they can later use to justify the "self defence" beatings of the protesters.

Not sure if the intent is to say that accidental firing happens but I don't think of whacking a gun repeatedly behind the pin with a mallet as accidental or stimulating an accidental situation (like a fall).

[-] Xx_Aru_xX@hexbear.net 2 points 2 years ago

Sig Sauer pistols are known to fire accidentally

[-] Maoo@hexbear.net 3 points 2 years ago

Just the P320 and it was more or less recalled (after a lawsuit) because of that.

Guns are inherently unsafe but an NYPD cop doesn't "accidentally" fire their gun, they fire it through negligence or intentionally.

"accidentally"

[-] porcupine@lemmygrad.ml 29 points 2 years ago

The gun had an accident. The gun made a mistake. The gun fired itself in a situation where a gun shouldn't be firing itself.

[-] Rojo27@hexbear.net 22 points 2 years ago

Dang, guns just do that?

Once again, another school shooter surrounded by police that did nothing... shakingmydamnhead.gif

The sergeant had broken the glass of a locked office on the first floor of the building and switched his firearm — a 9-millimeter handgun with a flashlight mounted on it — from his right hand to his left hand to reach through the broken glass to unlock the door from the inside...

Also... HAHA... cop did a vandalism before doing a school shooting.

[-] peeonyou@hexbear.net 13 points 2 years ago

it went off! it happens.. you know it just happens. They dont make guns how they used to you know.

[-] bobs_guns@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 2 years ago

oopsie woopsie :^)

-- the cop

[-] Hestia@hexbear.net 8 points 2 years ago

I'm all for an individuals right to carry.

As long as you're not a cop. They're the last people who should be armed.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
