How do you know when someone is a vegan?

Don't worry, they'll tell you.

[-] tomi000@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

Funny, but just as untrue and offensive as OPs meme. I dont understand how people dont see that and keep being offended while offending 10x harder.

[-] random_character_a@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

Yeah. First clue was that the images were reversed

[-] iiGxC@slrpnk.net -4 points 5 months ago

Good work detective, I know that was a tough case but you really stepped up to uncover the truth

Keto was originally intended for children suffering from epilepsy, and was quite effective for it:

The ketogenic diet is effective in substantially decreasing difficult-to-control seizures and can successfully be administered in a wide variety of settings. source

More recently it has been adopted as a weight loss tool, but it doesn’t seem perfect and especially there seems to be no reason to participate for more than a few months (when a more wholesome diet intended for long term sustenance of fitness might be adopted):

Ketogenic low-carbohydrate diets have increased in popularity over recent years, but the degree of carbohydrate restriction required to achieve ketosis remains unclear. In general, studies have shown greater weight loss at 3–6 months with KLC diets compared with LF diets, however this difference is no longer apparent at 12 months. source

That said, this meme participates in a series of ad hominem attacks about the character of those participating in keto dieting which are broadly inaccurate and clearly intended to effect rage in its audience, which explains the poor reception of the post. I would suggest better rhetorical methods than exhibited here to those interested in furthering the adoption of vegan diets.

52% upvoted

You can shitpost about anything, but not their sacred right to eat industrial meat.

Good job op.

[-] MilitantVegan@lemmy.world -2 points 5 months ago

What I've been finding so far about lemmy is that if I post something vegan that puts all the blame on corporations, the upvotes come rolling in. But anything else is either closer to a 1:1 ratio, or downvote abyss.

[-] ShitOnABrick@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

Those upvotes must really put the dopamine in your brain. Considering they're worthless on the fediverse

[-] Lauchmelder@feddit.de 2 points 5 months ago

perhaps it's because you're insulting the very people you're trying to convert to your cause. work on your rhetoric and watch your success rate skyrocket

[-] CluckN@lemmy.world -3 points 5 months ago

lol this “us vs them” mentality is what keeps the meat industry strong. If Vegan’s weren’t insufferable the entire meat industry would’ve died in ‘07.

[-] riodoro1@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

Im sure it would buddy.

[-] tomi000@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

Im pretty sure you yourself know how untrue that is. People who eat meat do so mainly out of habit. Habits get engraved in your personality in a way that your ego will defend them to the death. If anyone or anything tries to change your habits, your ego makes it feel like theyre trying to kill you.

Its not really their fault, they have all the necessary information right in front of their eyes but cant overcome the habit hurdle. This is basic human behavior and we shouldnt drive people into corners based on their weaknesses.

[-] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 6 points 5 months ago

I'm pretty sure you can do vegan keto, it's literally just eating even more beans than normal

[-] MilitantVegan@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

There is a vegan keto, and at least one study has found it to not have the same harms that other variants of keto has. The problem there is that it's an extremely restrictive diet, so good luck to anyone trying to stick to that.

Aside from the one legitimate use it has - alleviating seizure symptoms - keto is just plain a diet that makes no sense for humans whatsoever.

[-] ieatpwns@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

This is certainly a hill…

[-] magnetosphere@fedia.io 2 points 5 months ago

I like the phrase “alpha as fuck”

[-] SingularEye@lemmy.blahaj.zone -5 points 5 months ago

Carbs are good but being vegan makes you brittle and weak

[-] Droggelbecher@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago
[-] TseseJuer@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

these bean sprouts have like 15lbs of muscle mass between them. first dude is a race car driver? Lmao What a joke some twig on the list for being able to walk a long distance?

[-] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world -1 points 5 months ago

Lol, they're so rare you have to make a list of vegan athletes. This is a prime example of the exception proving the rule.

[-] MilitantVegan@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

It's a sample size issue. What percentage of people make the effort to get swole? It's maybe (maybe not) a similar figure to how many vegans bother to get strong. Now what percentage of all people are vegan? Estimates range from 1% to 10%, with 3-5% being probably the most reasonable estimate.

But you're the one making the claim without backing it up. Vegans can get all the protein they need, even when strength training. And the best part is we do it without the heart disease, cancer risk, and autoimmune diseases.

[-] Droggelbecher@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

Out of curiosity, what autoimmune diseases are prevented by veganism? I've never heard of that before (vegan btw)

[-] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 5 months ago

the venus williams bit mentions that being vegan helps with the symptoms of some autoimmune disease. it doesn't say it prevents them (at least not from my reading)

[-] Droggelbecher@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

Ah yeah I didn't remember that since reading, thanks

[-] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 5 months ago

one of them is a lifter. one of them plays pro football. everyone else is endurance, speed, or technical athlete. so while being vegan seems like a reasonable option for people who don't need mass and strength, it appears that vegans who have those attributes are outliers.

[-] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

I'm hearing excuses. I'm not the original commenter, I'm not making the frail and brittle claim.

[-] tomi000@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

Youre hearing excuses when given a perfectly reasonable explanation? How fucking arrogant can you get?

[-] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world -1 points 5 months ago
[-] null@slrpnk.net 1 points 5 months ago

You said "its the exception proving the rule". So yes, you're absolutely co-signing that claim.

[-] MilitantVegan@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago
[-] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

Nope. Maybe actually look this time?

[-] null@slrpnk.net 2 points 5 months ago

So why aren't they brittle and weak?

[-] spujb@lemmy.cafe 4 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Misinformation, you are lying.

[A] comprehensive meta-analysis reports a significant protective effect of a vegetarian diet versus the incidence and/or mortality from ischemic heart disease (−25%) and incidence from total cancer (−8%). Vegan diet conferred a significant reduced risk (−15%) of incidence from total cancer. source

[And the results of this study] suggest that a vegan diet does not seem to be detrimental to endurance and muscle strength in healthy young lean women. In fact, our study showed that submaximal endurance might be better in vegans compared with omnivores. Therefore, these findings contradict the popular belief of the general population. source
