My friend is in Japan, keeps getting this ad, and it's driving them nuts (they also says the company is worse than BetterHelp, apparently).

Adjusting to the reality that Japan isn’t full of walking booba waifus

[-] Tankiedesantski@hexbear.net 50 points 5 months ago

I was eating with a friend in a Shinjuku bar once when the only other foreigner in the place came up to us because we were speaking English. Dude proceeded to rant about how women in Japan were "stuck up bitches" because they refused to date him.

Nothing more entertaining than an orientalist fetishizing white dude running head on into the reality that actual Asian women don’t conform to the submissive geisha fantasy in their head.

"Japan is good because it's an ethnostate and hates foreigners!"

"Wait, what do you mean Japanese people don't know their place as filthy brown peasants and just treat me like royalty? Do they not know they are angering a God!?!?"

[-] wtypstanaccount04@hexbear.net 38 points 5 months ago

I went to Enoshima and didn't pick up a harem of gyarus! WTF Japan?

[-] Tankiedesantski@hexbear.net 24 points 5 months ago

Enoshima

Well there's your problem, you should have gone to Harajuku instead!

(Jokes, you should actually go to a shabby housing estate in Saitama)

[-] Pluto@hexbear.net 11 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

...Is Enoshima worth it? I might return to Japan.

Legit question. Want to see more of the country.

I was disappointed with Japan one time when I realized there's not much (enough for me) prevalence of Judo schools in Tokyo. How much of an orientalist that makes me is between me and God. Though people were very patient and kind to me as I spoke with my broken Japanese.

[-] Owl@hexbear.net 10 points 5 months ago

Honestly, finding out that there's not a weirdly large subculture dedicated to [fill in the blank] in Tokyo is a bit of a letdown.

[-] Erika3sis@hexbear.net 5 points 5 months ago

"What do you mean not every Tokyoite owns and regularly wears a papakha and cherkeska‽ Taiga Nozaki literally teaches people in that city how to dance lezginka!"

Adjustment disorder is often used in psychiatry to say an event or thing has fucked your mental health and you’re not responding well, as opposed to say major depression or generalised anxiety disorder where everything could be ostensibly fine in your life, but you feel super depressed or anxious despite this.

[-] Pluto@hexbear.net 6 points 5 months ago

Oh.

I may have that but am coming out of it.

[-] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 25 points 5 months ago

[-] TheDoctor@hexbear.net 26 points 5 months ago

Roppongi

Roppongi is known for skevvy night clubs that cater to foreigners. In a Youtube clip I watched with an old rock or metal musician (Lemmy maybe?) - he had a "Roppongi / 六本木" street sign souvenir in his apartment.

Roppongi

Roppongi (Japanese: 六本木, lit. 'six trees') is a district of Minato, Tokyo, Japan, famous for the affluent Roppongi Hills development area and popular night club scene.

[-] Tankiedesantski@hexbear.net 30 points 5 months ago

Roppongi is both home to sketchy bars and ridiculously expensive offices and shops. If you asked me to picture a clinic in Roppongi, it'd either be a sketchy clinic that dispenses boner pills and VD medication, or an extremely high end clinic that dispenses boner pills, VD medication, and plastic surgery.

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 15 points 5 months ago

Exactly. Haha.

And there's another bifurcation. Some establishments are typical for Tokyo and are simply located there and they aren't known foreigner hotspots.

[-] Pluto@hexbear.net 5 points 5 months ago

Interesting..

I can totally imagine a Tokyo Syndrome from what I hear about the over-tourism there.

[-] Pluto@hexbear.net 11 points 5 months ago

Sounds like Havana syndrome!

Jk jk

Adjustment disorder on Wikipedia

(they also says the company is worse than BetterHelp, apparently)

So bad that they couldn't even get a real person to volunteer for the photo, nor failing that even get an actual artist to draw the character, kazhetsa.

[-] Pluto@hexbear.net 18 points 5 months ago

Yeah, it's AI-generated, the image, I mean.

[-] Erika3sis@hexbear.net 20 points 5 months ago

As we all know, health services advertising themselves with animanga artwork are only trustworthy when the artwork is not AI generated. That's why I only get my HRT from Otok—

/altjoke Japanese scammers preying on American weebs by using anime girls like moth traps

[-] booty@hexbear.net 9 points 5 months ago

using anime girls like moth traps

moth traps? there are people on this planet who set moth traps? you mean a device intended to harm a creature that weighs 1g and could not harm you if it and ten thousand of its buddies dedicated their lives to it? the same creature that i am delighted to see every time i encounter one because it's cute and completely harmless? that moth? a trap for that???

[-] PointAndClique@hexbear.net 25 points 5 months ago

Moth traps are common in dry food warehouses, libraries and other storage/archival/preservation facilities where unchecked moth breeding can see whole shelves eaten before you knkw what hit you.

[-] Erika3sis@hexbear.net 11 points 5 months ago

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moth_trap

"Moth traps are devices used for capturing moths for scientific research or domestic pest control. Entomologists use moth traps to study moth populations, behavior, distribution, and role in ecosystems, contributing to biodiversity conservation and ecological monitoring efforts. Homeowners, on the other hand, employ moth traps to protect their homes from moth infestations, particularly clothes moths and pantry moths, which can cause significant damage to textiles and contaminate stored food products."

[-] booty@hexbear.net 7 points 5 months ago

which can cause significant damage to textiles

[-] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 16 points 5 months ago

marx-doomer The linen. The poor helpless linen.

[-] KobaCumTribute@hexbear.net 8 points 5 months ago

oh no my textiles

Yes, the things you wear every day as a necessary part of existing in society, sleep on as a necessary part of continuing to exist, and use to survive through the winter.

[-] booty@hexbear.net 1 points 5 months ago

yeah i mean i do have to wear clothes, but ima be honest i wouldnt be doing it if i werent being forced to at gunpoint. and i certainly don't need to sleep on textiles to exist, in fact i had planned to transition to sleeping on the floor but i was given a mattress so i continue to sleep in a bed through pure inertia.

and i live in the deep south all i need to survive through winter is basic shelter

[-] NPa@hexbear.net 2 points 5 months ago

Nice try mothman, now look over there, it's a nice bright light projection

[-] booty@hexbear.net 1 points 5 months ago

big-cool i dont know what you're talking about comrade

[-] Pluto@hexbear.net 5 points 5 months ago

Actually, yeah, moths can be pests themselves ("pests" not in the pejorative sense) and I believe they can carry disease?

I'm not sure, but I know of moth traps.
