I'm like the opposite kind of rdr2 hater, I loved all the boring shit but the unfocused story and the shooting gallery gameplay ruined it.

The ideal cowboy game would lean into the simmy stuff, stylized graphics instead of realism, have you drive some cattle across the landscape with a character-driven story, have quiet chats with them during the night watch. And now since we are commercially unviable anyway, make it take place in like the Eurasian steppe or anywhere else that is not a settler fantasy. Also, make the cowboys gay. Thanks.

I must be a weird kind of defender because i love all the boring shit, and while i like the story i have critiscism of it and i think theres plenty of room for it.

I do agree that the gun play was by far the least intetesting part, and getting into so many massive gunfights is really at odds with the best part of the game - the "boring" cowboy sim stuff that feels grounded and is such a joy. Making coffee at your campsite, going fishing, grooming your horse. Finally skinnning enough snakes to get that beautiful saddle.

Finally someone who understands

I haven't dared to start playing RDR2 yet, but how much of a simulation is it actually? The thing that frustrates me about Rockstar games is that for all the insane level of attention they put into the most minute of details, the simulation elements just kind of awkwardly float on top of incredibly loose arcadey gameplay and can safely be ignored because the games need to be able to be completed by dads who only ever buy like 3 games for their consoles

In a just world Rockstar's budget and resources would be redistributed to like the Stalker devs to create the most lavish Slavjank game in existence

Its not a deep sim in the slightest. A lot of the things i enjoy and love in the game can be completely ignored. The mechanics they do have toward that end are fairly shallow. With the money they have it'd be amazing if they made a real sim. I think what's fun is just that its a gorgeous world to camp and make some coffee in the morning - not because theres a mechanical reason, but just because you want to.

Its been a while since I've played, but i don't think Arthur really needs to sleep, or at least not often. I would set up a tent at night not because i mechanically needed to, but because it was dark lol. I'd cook the fish i caught that day and have a meal. Not because Arthur needs to eat that much that often, but because i wanted to, and i enjoyed it.

I love games that really match mechanics to these things. But, i still enjoyed just being in the world without that component.

That's what's always made the focus on realism in Rockstar's post-San Andreas output feel hollow to me. All of these cool things exist but they're just there for you to amuse yourself with. Maybe one day I'll try some of those ultrarealism mods for GTAIV

[-] BurgerPunk@hexbear.net 5 points 4 months ago

I really wish that someday someone could marry the surface level "realism" and polish Rockstar is capable of with some real mechanical depth to make it feel substantial.

I can't shoot clan members consequence-free outside

[-] BurgerPunk@hexbear.net 4 points 4 months ago

I love outside, but i can't always take a weeks long camping trip whenever i want. And i don't have a horse lol.

[-] Egon@hexbear.net 4 points 4 months ago

Yeah I loved all that stuff, doing the hunting quests was great fun

[-] Egon@hexbear.net 9 points 4 months ago

I liked the gunplay, I hated that it was the core gameplay loop. It was so off-putting that you just keep rocking into massive 20-man shootouts and you solo the whole thing. I'd much prefer it if it was more duel-based and even then there's less of them. There's a reason they're the peak of most western movies and not... Just the bread and butter filler. Meeting someone at high noon should be a big deal, instead I hit antagonize and here I go murdering again

[-] FearsomeJoeandmac@hexbear.net 5 points 4 months ago

I don't understand it and probably won't pick up the next read dead if it plays so boring again. Skinning animals to get the various different arthur outfits and stuff like that had absolutely no appeal to me. I did hunt down the legendary animals and did most of the sidequests so I gave the game a fair shake.

I'm glad you like it, but I would almost call it more of a simulator than an actual video game.

You do you though. Bloodborne is my personal favorite game of the last 10 years if that tells you anything.

[-] Egon@hexbear.net 5 points 4 months ago

Never got to try bloodborne, but it looks cool. I loved Sekiro.
I guess it could be called a simulator more than an action game (if it wasn't for all the darned gunplay), but I like immersive sims. Shadows of Doubt is a great one

[-] FearsomeJoeandmac@hexbear.net 5 points 4 months ago

I reccomend when you have the spare cash lying around picking up a cheap used ps4 just to play bloodborne. If you liked sekiro you'll love that as well.

Not knocking you for liking what you like. This is a joke topic anyways

Yeah, if i hadn't enjoyed that I'd probably hate the game too lol.

Haven't played it yet, but I'm looking forward to it. I loved DS1 and I'm one of thise wierd people who loved DS2

[-] BobDole@hexbear.net 7 points 4 months ago

A whole group of gay shepherds shooting bows and arrows from horseback

[-] AndJusticeForAll@hexbear.net 6 points 4 months ago

I think that maybe someday I'll play RDR2, and then I see a story cutscene and the interest goes away.

[-] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 18 points 4 months ago

You can set Pinkertons on fire what more do you want

[-] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 16 points 4 months ago

rdr2 is good and you're a lib

[-] FearsomeJoeandmac@hexbear.net 7 points 4 months ago

Back off I'll take you on headstrong to take on anyone.

[-] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 9 points 4 months ago

I'll set you loose in the Lemoyne bayou and chase you down like a wild hog

[-] ButtBidet@hexbear.net 14 points 4 months ago

BTW, I ramped up the anger and cursing for comedic effect. People really don't need to get upset over a difference of opinion over a game. I'm fine with people liking it.

Unless OP is also being sarcastic. I'm old and shit goes over my head sometimes.

[-] FearsomeJoeandmac@hexbear.net 10 points 4 months ago

I'm joking honestly. I agree with you though. I loved the game due to its story and characters, but I can see why you think it's slow.

[-] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 3 points 4 months ago

Honestly found your example of Atomic Heart hilarious because I couldn't get into that or RDR2 for basically opposite reasons

Atomic Heart starts strong, like the first hour is so fucking cool but then I kinda lost interest. Probably doesn't help that I don't care for first person games and don't really like Bioshock

RDR2 on the other hand has such a miserably slow opening segment that I can never get through to make it to the good parts

Disregard RDR

Embrace Samurai Western for the ps2

[-] FearsomeJoeandmac@hexbear.net 7 points 4 months ago

Indeed. What are you up to today?

[-] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 6 points 4 months ago

Trying to stay cool with my cat because it's super hot and humid today.

[-] jimmyjohnsandwichsix@hexbear.net 11 points 4 months ago

Only people who 100% the game can have opinions about it

[-] jimmyjohnsandwichsix@hexbear.net 12 points 4 months ago

It’s me, I 100% the game

[-] minyakcurry 6 points 4 months ago

Even the gambler challenges? You're a God

[-] Dolores@hexbear.net 10 points 4 months ago
[-] Tunnelvision@hexbear.net 4 points 4 months ago

It’s me, I’m here to defend RDR2’s honor.

[-] Egon@hexbear.net 9 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

2long didn't read, but the title is correct which is why I love the game. Yeah I'm gonna spend 5 minutes hunting a deer and then skin it lfg. Yeah I'm gonna ride out into nowhere to have a shootout with a guy I thought I was just gonna talk to lfg. What's that you're collecting rocks and want me to find some? Sure lfg

stalin-gun-1logout If you're being serious. it's an old game, it's not worth fighting over

[-] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 11 points 4 months ago
[-] Egon@hexbear.net 12 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

No, I just accept the inevitable passage of time wherein a 6-year old game could reasonably be described as old. Just be glad I didn't call it retro or vintage

[-] FearsomeJoeandmac@hexbear.net 3 points 4 months ago

I'm totally being serious when I'm half quoting a crappy song by a butt rock band in my post.

shakes head What?

[-] Egon@hexbear.net 5 points 4 months ago

I dont know the song, so didn't pick up on that. Seemed like hyperbole tho, but I just wanted to make sure on the off chance

eh, RDR2 is ok. I played like twenty hours of it which were pretty fun but when I realized I'd have to do the same things for another sixty+ hours I stopped playing it. That's it

[-] companero@hexbear.net 7 points 4 months ago

Rockstar hasn't made a worthwhile game since GTA4

[-] RyanGosling@hexbear.net 9 points 4 months ago

IIRC Dan Houser didn’t care much about GTA after they made the RDR series and put most of his focus on that lol

[-] BurgerPunk@hexbear.net 7 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

If thats true then Dan Houser felt the same way about his games that i did michael-laugh

[-] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 4 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Rockstar hasn't made a worthwhile game

(Note to gamers, I am joking)

[-] peppersky@hexbear.net 4 points 4 months ago

I'd say that without joking.
