Wait until you get one that just has a download code printed inside.

[-] FloridaBoi@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago

It will have a QR code to allow to register with your email on the game website so you can get the redemption code for the marketplace

I remember the old pre-millenium video games would come in a giant cardboard box to make buying a tiny floppy disk feel more worthwhile.

Pointlessly inflating packaging should just be illegal, it's pure wastefulness.

Nintendo sells game cases with nothing inside except a code for digital download lol

They've done this for awhile. I remember getting something like this for some of the Fallout 3 DLC on Xbox 360 ages ago

Genuinely a giant cardboard box would be a significant improvement over this. At least it’s not a ton of plastic.

I miss the old times of games that came in cardboard boxes with a manual. I have fond memories of buying Icewind Dale and Fallout 1/2 and spending some time reading the manuals. SiN also had a cool manual with a backstory comic that was the coolest shit to me as a kid.

Civ 3 came with a physical copy of the rules/civipedia. It was about 6x4" but was like 300 pages. That book was thicc.

I miss the Blizzard manuals. I spent so much time looking at the art for WarCraft 1 and 2.

Imagine how much plastic would be cut down if capitalism didn't insist on marketing space on their slop

At the very least stick a instructional pamphlet in there.

[-] roux@hexbear.net 38 points 1 week ago

Imo, a booklet should be mandatory if you are wasting this much plastic to sell a physical game cartridge. Physical collectors really should get cool art stuff as a treat lol.

I still hold onto my Morrowind map that came with my Xbox copy. More maps!

[-] polskilumalo@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 1 week ago

I love my Oblivion copy for the 360 for that reason. The thick booklet and map are reaaaaallyyy cool.

Owning the game is still far better than "owning" a digital copy FWIW.

But yeah, I really miss the era of opening a game and it coming w/ a fun colorful instruction manual and even a cheat-code or two.

Nintendo 20 years ago. They’ve doubled the size of the box and removed the booklet. Also MSRP is no longer $40 like it was for DS games, it’s $70.

Not only that but they took away the handy GBA cartridge holder

[-] grandepequeno@hexbear.net 26 points 1 week ago

If the covers aren't going to have anything inside just make the damn container smaller

[-] robot_dog_with_gun@hexbear.net 25 points 1 week ago

it's literally about shelf space because the container is an advertisement
