Incredible that the "I promise to stop drinking if you let me manage the military" gamble worked. Sign me up for the Secretary of Defense rehab.

[-] putridfairytale@hexbear.net 50 points 11 months ago

He said he'd stop drinking but he never said he wouldn't start parachuting oxy

[-] regul@hexbear.net 24 points 11 months ago

He could just boof it.

[-] AntifaSuperWombat@hexbear.net 46 points 11 months ago

Hegseth has several tattoos, among them a Jerusalem cross on his chest and one reading "Deus Vult", a Latin phrase meaning "God wills it", on his bicep.

He’s a fucking crusader larper! lea-tired

Like him being aremoved is pretty much a job requirement but honestly, where do they keep finding those absolute clowns? Don’t they have some normal, evil people lying around somewhere?

[-] anarchoilluminati@hexbear.net 21 points 11 months ago

Ah, man, this guy will definitely start another fucking war in the Middle East, huh?

May he implode the organizational structure cause his generals won't bring him bourbon fast enough inshallah-script

(and not, you know, deploy military on protestors with screams of deus vult)

*or buy doohickey ai weapon system which determines dc is the greatest threat to usa and nukes it

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 29 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

deploy military on protestors with screams of deus vult

After he does that democratic senators will "voice their concerns". Maybe they will send a sternly worded letter to the Pentagon. Meanwhile Fetterman will be caught on a hot mic saying "The protestors deserved it."

So I know Hegseth is a drunk and maybe a wife beater but why is he being made SoD? Like was he a general or a ranking member on the defense committee or something?

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 40 points 11 months ago

why

Trump wanted him. Not only is Hegseth a repulsive human being - before (In one of his books? In an interview?) he said the military could be deployed against US civilians. More...

When the Democratic senator Elissa Slotkin asked whether he would refuse unconstitutional orders, and whether he would decline to deploy the military against US civilians, Hegseth evaded a direct answer, saying “I reject the premise” of the questions.

[-] miz@hexbear.net 27 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Elissa Slotkin

the only memory I have of this name is of her saying something genocidal and zionist

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 35 points 11 months ago

I googled.

Elissa has dedicated her career to serving the country she loves. A former CIA analyst who served three tours in Iraq alongside the U.S. military...

[-] miz@hexbear.net 26 points 11 months ago
[-] blobjim@hexbear.net 6 points 11 months ago

I mean "I reject the premise" is the correct answer.

[-] freagle@lemmygrad.ml 29 points 11 months ago

Because he's a dyed-in-the-wool propagandist and true believer

[-] Biggay@hexbear.net 13 points 11 months ago

hes just a random fucking guy? was he a troop at all???

[-] VHS@hexbear.net 25 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

He was a troop in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Apparently his HMMWV got hit by an RPG which unfortunately did not explode. He's also a pro-war lobbyist who loves war criminals.

[-] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml 34 points 11 months ago

He was on fox and friends weekend which trump watches, and he said nice things about Trump. And he seemed like he would be loyal. Those are Trump's only criteria other than being "straight out of central casting"

[-] CliffordBigRedDog@hexbear.net 11 points 11 months ago

he was like a desk jockey major or smth which is small potatoes compared to the usual ppl who get the job

[-] Tower@lemm.ee 24 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Nope, just a dude on Fox News with some military experience. Square jaw, talks tough, so of course Trump loved him. From a collection of CBS News articles:

Hegseth was valedictorian at Forest Lake High School in Minnesota and attended Princeton University, where he played basketball. From there, he joined the Minnesota National Guard and later the Army National Guard. He was sent abroad three times, as part of a security platoon at Guantanamo Bay, an infantryman in Iraq and counterinsurgency instructor in Afghanistan. Hegseth does not have senior military or national security experience.

.

Co-host of Fox News Channel's "Fox & Friends Weekend," Hegseth has been a contributor to the network for a decade. He developed a friendship with Trump through the president-elect's regular appearances on the show. In a statement, a Fox News spokesperson complimented Hegseth's military knowledge, saying his "insights and analysis especially about the military resonated deeply with our viewers."

.

He's also written a number of books, several for the network's publishing imprint, including "The War on Warriors: Behind the Betrayal of the Men Who Keep Us Free." In announcing Hegseth as his pick, Trump complimented that book, noting its "nine weeks on the New York Times best-sellers list, including two weeks at NUMBER ONE."

[-] xiaohongshu@hexbear.net 20 points 11 months ago

All I can tell you is that Trump 2017-2020 was the best thing ever to happen to China. Take this information and interpret it in any way you like.

[-] regul@hexbear.net 17 points 11 months ago

He was on Fox News.

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 32 points 11 months ago

Betting pool for the first time as secretary of defense that news breaks that he's clearly visibly drunk in public.

He'll be drunk tonight but even if it's at a restaurant - it'll be lied about because everybody around him will be a friendly including the staff.

---

My guess is within four months from now.

NYT live thread

Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island, the top Democrat on the armed services panel, put a warning in his statement on Hegseth’s confirmation. “I am going to watch him like a hawk,” he said, adding: “I will point out where we disagree. I will demand accountability.”

---

Hegseth may be celebrating but he is not toasting, if he is staying true to his word. He said during his confirmation process that he would not take a drink if he was confirmed.

---

Some Democratic Senators [are being cordial]. “Now that he has been confirmed to this position, I sincerely hope we can work together in good faith to ensure the wellbeing of our service members,” Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Democrat of New Hampshire, said in a statement. “It’s critical we put the security of Americans and our nation above all else.”
