yes oh my god it's infuriating, like no i dont want to go on your kiddy diddler platform to get the files for your fucking total conversion mod!! just put it on Moddb like EVERYONE ELSE
I have no idea how it even caught on. It was like one day, everyone wanted to be on discord to chat.
"We're literally playing a game with in-game voice chat. Just use that?"
"No bro let's run a third party app in the background that increases latency trust me bro just get discord bro."
Just why? It isn't secure or private. It doesn't do anything we weren't already doing with existing technology. Where did it even come from?
i hate discord as much as the next person but i don't think it's that weird, it is quite nice to have a centralised voice+text zone for your gamer buddies or whatever. my group just got sick of skype getting worse one day and switched. now we await the next alternative because discord has gotten to suck so bad too
This part isn't that weird if you're playing with friends. You'll probably want to get everyone together and make sure everone's mics work before you fire up the game or try to load into the same match. Also if you're playing with friends you're probably also just gonna talk about stuff you don't want randos to hear.
Before Discord, my friend group used Skype and Steam Chat for this purpose on PC, but also Xbox Live's party chat back when the Xbox 360 was a thing
You're also putting yourself at a disadvantage if playing something with proximity voice with randoms. It's against the spirit of the game, but literally everyone else will not be relying on proximity chat, they will be in Discord or whatever.
Seriously. I downloaded it once, realized it's like shitty slack (and slack is already shitty slack) , uninstalled. Call me old, but I don't want to be part of a community that uses discord as it's main means of communication.
Maybe this is how usenet or mailing list people felt about forums 20 years ago.
