I think just a big normal hornet, sucker was like the size of two quarters.

It could have been an invasive species then, but I didn't have the heart to kill it no matter how much bugs creep me out

The invasive hornets kill native bees and eat them.

If it was the invasive kind, you should report the sighting to your local agriculture department. They need to track that sort of thing.

Are you in the Americas? There's rumors of them spreading in the Pacific Northwest.
