Venezuelan military and politician who was president of Venezuela from 1999 until his death in 2013. The influence of this politician transcended the borders of his country by promoting the emergence in Latin America of a new batch of leftist leaders, opposed like him to economic neoliberalism and US interference and concerned with the most disadvantaged classes and indigenous minorities.

Hugo Chávez completed primary and secondary studies in Sabaneta and higher studies at the Military Academy of Venezuela, where he obtained the rank of second lieutenant in 1975. He held various positions in the Venezuelan Armed Forces, the last of which would be Commander of the Parachute Battalion Colonel Antonio Nicolás Briceño. In December 1982 he created, with two other captains of the Army, the Movimiento Bolivariano Revolucionario-200, with a nationalist and leftist orientation.

In 1989 the then president of Venezuela, Carlos Andrés Pérez, applied a shock plan with neoliberal measures under the auspices of the IMF to face the serious economic and financial crisis that affected the country in those years. The popular classes of Caracas mobilized en masse against the government's plan, in a movement known as Caracazo. The president ordered the army to repress the demonstrations, which provoked strong discontent within the Armed Forces.

In 1992, Hugo Chávez led as a military commander a coup attempt to overthrow the government of Carlos Andrés Pérez. Despite being favorably received by the population, the coup failed and Chávez was arrested, tried, and sentenced to two years in prison in Yare jail (1992-1994). That same year, another group of disgruntled soldiers staged another coup attempt, which also failed; among their demands was the release of Chávez.

In May 1993, Parliament removed President Carlos Andrés Pérez, accused of embezzlement of public funds. Fulfilling his electoral promise, in 1994 the new president, Rafael Caldera, agreed to dismiss the process opened against Chávez. After being released, Chávez left the army and entered fully into the political struggle; He founded the 5th Republic Movement (MVR) and began to travel the country explaining his proposals.

At the head of the MVR and with the support of several left-wing parties, Chávez presented his candidacy for the presidential elections of December 6, 1998 and was elected with 56.2% of the votes, prevailing over the consensus candidate of the traditional parties (COPEI and Acción Democrática). Following his program, the new president promoted the election of a Constituent Assembly in charge of drafting a new constitutional text, which would later be approved in a referendum. After the new constitution was approved in 1999, in July 2000 Chávez was reelected president of Venezuela for the period 2000-2006 with a wide difference over his opponents.

Two years later, on April 11, 2002, the Chávez government was the target of a failed civic-military coup riot that elevated Pedro Carmona, the president of the Fedecámaras employers' association, to the presidency. Prisoner for two days on Orchila Island, Hugo Chávez was restored to his duties thanks to the action of fractions of the National Army and his supporters, and the country returned to constitutional order. Conflicts with the opposition did not cease, and in August 2004 Chávez had to face a recall referendum on his presidential mandate, from which he emerged strengthened by getting 59% of the votes, and that enabled him to govern until the end of his term. Two months later, Chávez's party achieved a resounding victory in the regional and local elections in Venezuela.

Faced with the possibility of the presidential replacement offered by the elections at the end of 2006, the opposition managed to join forces and gather around a single candidate, the Social Democrat Manuel Rosales. The elections were held on December 3 in a climate of total normality and with a participation of 70% of the electorate; Venezuelans again gave their approval to Chávez, who became president for the third time for the 2007-2013 period by obtaining 63% of the votes.

During his third term, he advanced in the proposal to deepen the called "21st century socialism", for which, among other decisions, he expanded the process of nationalization of numerous service companies. Presidential reelection was one of the hottest issues among those exposed to political debate during 2007.

The key to what would be the last re-election of Chávez (for the 2013-2019 term) lay in the social achievements of his government, reflected in the drastic reduction of illiteracy, the increase in university students of popular social extraction, the expansion of the public health coverage and the creation of popular markets with basic necessities at prices subsidized by the State.

After the electoral victory, Chávez appointed Nicolás Maduro as Vice President of the Republic, who had been serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs, a portfolio in which he was also ratified. The president's decision was interpreted as the will to deposit in Maduro the inheritance of his leadership, taking into account that Chávez's health had deteriorated greatly since he was diagnosed with cancer in June 2011.

On the day scheduled for his inauguration (January 10, 2013), the president could not be present in Caracas because he was in Havana receiving cancer treatment. Despite the claims of the opposition, the Supreme Court of Justice understood that, since there was no interruption in the exercise of the position, the government in office could continue its management, and that it was valid to postpone the inauguration, pending Chávez be in a position to be able to swear his office in Venezuelan territory. VC Maduro remained at the helm of the government, receiving directives from his president from Cuba.

This anomalous situation lasted only two months: Chávez died on March 5, without being inaugurated president. VP Maduro remained in charge of the executive on an interim basis, until the holding of new elections. Chávez's funeral, attended by more than thirty heads of state from around the world, lasted three days; at the end of the same it was announced that the body would be embalmed and exposed in a mausoleum, where Venezuelans could go to pay tribute to the leader.

Someone has been posting Revolutionary Communist Party posters on the bus stops around town. People had been doodling on them, some of it inane, some of it humourous, and some of it reactionary; However, the other day someone plastered a load of pro-zionist stickers over the top of one. I walked past and a guy and his girlfirend were looking at it, so I went over to look too.

He saw the word Zionist, and said "well I don't agree with that, I don't want to kill Palestinians!" We spoke a bit more - he asked if I was in favour of the poster underneath, and I said I was. I think it was the first time I've ever actually told anyone around here I was a communist. I don't know anything about the RCP, but it's the thought that counts, ans this is a heavily conservative area. We exchanged names, shook hands, and parted ways.

After almost two years of horror, it's nice that the man on the street seems to be realising that Zionism is synonymous with slaughter. It's also nice to form some kind of connection with someone in real life over politics.

Also, hello, everyone! It's been a while.

[-] principalkohoutek@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago

I think RCP is trots/cult but hey it's better than nothing

[-] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago

Would be funny if OP immediately replied to that guy saying "No, I don't like Bob Avakian, I think his Trotskyist schtick got old 60 years ago" like that would mean anything to a random.

Think about how many people are employed in marketing, producing graphics for the packaging, branding, and otherwise adding zero value to the actual product itself. Then splitting engineering talent and assigning some of them on differentiating their product from other similar ones. So wasteful.

The other day we went with my friends to a medieval festival (first time for me).

The friend that came up with this festival idea also wanted me to meet an acquaintance of his (they know each other from a tabletop club). And this guy also wanted to meet me.

Well, this acquaintance is an historian who is also a recreationist, and he was with his... "guild"? at the festival (they had their own booth and everything). Why did he want to meet me? Because I'm a history student.

Now, when we got to their booth, they were not a Medieval "guild". They were freaking Italian military recreationists. And ones that specialized in a specific unit from WW2...

He wanted to meet me? All of them were cold as ice when they saw the color of my skin. Still, they kept it civil, told me the history of the unit they recreate, showed me some memorabilia that they had in their booth (original helmets and gas masks, because most of them were grandchildren of Italian soldiers). Stayed there a bunch of minutes for my friend, and then we went to the other booths.

My friend has a great heart, but he's not clever. We talked about this, with the whole group, in a bar after leaving the festival. And... yeah, my friend started to put two and two together.

Now the festival was kinda meh. Two cool booths with history teachears who loved the period, the food was ok, the main event was a fighting tournament, and mulled wine was incredible.

Came across a bandcamp page for a solo thing i did like 10 years ago and didn't even know I shared. Its weird. I wanr people to listen, so, experimental post punk. Rudimentary peni and wire are abig influence and thr drums were me goin through a cheap keyboards presets in order and writing songs to em as fast as possible. The 'guitar' is a bass through a really bady made distortion pedal, chorus, flange and delay with no bass or mid only treble and all else dimed. It's the best tone ever.

Well fuck me. I THOUGHT my new dose of Adderall (20mg XR) was going to work. It seemed like it for several days, not even the first few that most people seem to have, I didnt feel euphoric. Just in a good mood and like the dopamine was fucking working as it should. Like, when completing tasks I felt actually satisfied, instead of feeling like I'm just jumping to be able to cling on to the ledge to lift myself up to arrive at satisfaction but never making it. As an example, before this dose I felt like I was compelled to clean because if I DON'T do it, I'll be anxious and stressed. But this felt like I was just glad to do it for the sake of doing it and feeling good about having a clean space, instead of some outside negative consequence spurring me on. But now the past few days Ive just been exhausted and completely unmotivated all day long. If I eat first thing, if I eat 1-2 hours after, I was drinking Jamaica for a couple days but cut that out because of the vitamin C, fatty breakfast, protein breakfast, it's all the fucking same. Hormonal changes don't make it any easier either. I'm so tired of this

Was walking down the river path one afternoon with my partner. Sun shining, hawks flying overhead, bumble bees bumbling... When we notice some small lady riding an electric scooter, nearing closer and closer. She was on speaker phone, and screamed "I WANT TO SPEAK TO AN AGENT!!!!". I could hear it repeated over and over as she scooted past us down the path.

It was very idyllic.

I'm fucking stressing, my hours have been cut down so hard that one day being missing (respiratory infection, went to the doctor for it) is literally cutting out more than half my paycheck 🙃 I'm looking for a new job now, one that's hopefully closer and somewhere near off the bus line, but until then I'm gonna be struggling off $250 a week with $150 of that going to rent.

suicidal ideationPart of me says the only reason I tried killing myself a few months ago was because I was drunk, but then I get sober and come back to this world and I'm not sure me being drunk was the only reason. I feel like so many people would be better off if I wasn't draining resources off them because I never have insurance long enough to get on disability.

Maybe it's my fault for letting the grass grow too high and setting the deck on the lawnmower way too low but i think Kobalt makes the worst piece of shit lawnmowers ever. Holy fucking shit, it clogs up every 5 feet, stops running even without a clog (i think if the blade slows down too quickly it thinks it's hitting the ground and stops? i don't fucking know), and now the fucking batteries won't even last long enough to mow my fucking back yard with two charge cycles. I've used this fucking thing like 6 times so it's not like i've been using the shit out of these batteries but woops.

God fuck this fucking thing, fuck. Two fucking days and i'm not even done mowing the fucking back yard, there's still a little fucking square i couldn't get before the batteries fucking stopped again. I'm not going out there again because being absolutely drenched with sweat once a day is my limit

I have a small yard btw fuck Kobalt, fuck

Journalpost/vent/family shitIDK... I feel like I'm so over my current living arrangement and yet, I know I can't do anything. And honestly I don't care that I live with my a parents and thankfully don't don't care so much, but my brother just makes it so fucking difficult. Over the years I've tried my best to try and smooth things over and walk the tightrope of not offending him in some way, yet he just doesn't want to change. One thing goes wrong and he fucking gives me the silent treatment for weeks if not months. I can't fucking live like this. And its just ingrained in me that I should always treat people like one thing can just set them down this path.

And the biggest thing right now is that with my dad's health continuing to decline and become less and less independent I just can't do anything that won't bother him. Don't help him enough even though I don't work from home like he does? Problem. Help him, but make one mistake? Problem. And he always acts like everything I do while I'm trying to help my dad is just wrong even though I generally do things exactly like how he does.

I'm fucking over it. I've done what I could. I've had direct conversations letting him know we could just talk things out. But no. We're in our 30s and he still wants to be confrontational about everything without wanting to work things out.

Bit idea: Pickpocket the tech execs snorting coke at company happy hour and swap it with pure fentanyl. For once, the happy hour will actually be for the workers.
