If you're using a brother printer you can just cover the ink "window" on the empty cartridge with black electrical tape. The printer will yell at you for using 3rd party ink, but after that it will let you print.
What do ya mean I'm out of black ink? Can't you combine all the colors to create black?
This is why some copiers won't work if they run out of a color.
Some models use all colors to make a deeper black.
