I joined lemmy after reddit API changes, as many people did. At first, it was amazing. The community felt so alive, so friendly and welcoming. Obviously, the activity wasn't exactly as large as it was on reddit, but I was patient, I knew more stuff was coming, and I was excited for it.

Unfortunately, this period would not last long. It would not last even a week until I got into my first argument with a tankie. I saw them and argued with them from time to time on reddit, but people there usually saw right through the bullshit and downvoted them to oblivion.

Here, it was so much different. They were all upvoted and supported by hordes more tankies. Constant genocide denial in China, support for Ruzzia, and somehow, for North Korea.

In retrospect, I should have left then, abandoned lemmy then and there, not really return to reddit, just leave both alone. I would have saved myself some sanity.

But I didn't, which I regret. I wasted my time here, constantly seeing this bullshit, and sometimes I didn't even have the motivation or energy to argue with them.

The amount of genocide denial, dictatorship praising, and insane arguments I've seen in a month blew past the amount of this shit I've seen on reddit in a fucking decade.

I don't see the future in this, none whatsoever. Lemmy will be here, but it will always stay a tankie hellhole unless you block thousands of people and whole instances. And if you do, the tankies will always just migrate to other instances to keep spreading hate.

I am tired of this bullshit and I am done.

idk, I stopped seeing any tankie content after blocking this instances. "sometimes I didn't even have the motivation or energy to argue with them"? you shouldn't argue with people like that, it's pointless. people arguing on Lemmy doesn't help anyone. if you feel the need to correct everyone then that's kinda a you issue

[-] shapesandstuff@feddit.org 37 points 1 week ago

if you feel the need to correct everyone then that’s kinda a you issue

True but also unhelpful imo. That's how social networks took hold, right. it's really hard to not voice your opinion if you see it (esp. unfairly) opposed.
I'm doing it right now, fully aware of it. I think it can lead to really productive interactions, just not with these types the OP describes.

[-] Droechai@lemm.ee 9 points 1 week ago

The old "Choose your battles" are useful to have in mind when interacting in an environment where both trolls and humans mingle

[-] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 90 points 1 week ago

Looking at their comments, OP does nothing on lemmy except interacting with rage bait trolls. Sometimes arguing is fun but if you think you need to correct or respond to every lemmy.ml comment in existence then ofcourse you will get depressed. Touch grass. Because the grass is green and your are just rolling around in a mud puddle.

Idk what you are talking about, looks like you filled your feed with the wrong community's and didn't block the right keywords. I am just here for the memes and tech and that's mostly tankiefree.

Yeah i mean ofcourse the stuff exists but why would you leave it in your feed if you feel like its impacting you negatively.

I personally want to see it because its a reflection of reality. There sadly just are a lot of crazy people out there in the world that believe this shit and i want to monitor them. This might seem a bit dramatized, but if everyone keeps looking away then we wont notice when they grow larger and once the Nazis are marching into our towns its going to be too late.

I have a small ass block list. I don't block by keyword, I have only instance blocked the 2 most egregious instances I've heard of (ML and Hexbear), and everything else is a per user basis. I'm also, like, a permanent fixture here; I see a ton of Lemmy.

I really only see the tankies in the communities dedicated to calling them out, like Meanwhile on Lemmygrad. Not just in the posts calling them out, but the droves of them that show up to spout their bullshit in attempt to defend and justify their stupidity. So posts like this just confuse the utter fuck out of me.

Block hexbear and lemmy.ml and all the tankie centric posts magically disappear. Though, you're on Blahjah; aren't they defederated from those instances already? And don't they disable voting?

[-] Sakychu@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 week ago

I agree I see very little of those post and my block list is also extremely small! Yes but I think they only disallow downvotes and they block hexbear but not lemmy.ml. Luckly that's just one click away!

Why is Lemmy.ml not blocked when they are basically hexbear lite? They should be blocked, many trolls and genocide deniers hide out there.

[-] GluWu@lemm.ee 3 points 1 week ago

I don't block anything. I'm not gaining anything by isolating myself in a bubble of comfort that consists of only things that I agree with. I already agree, there's nothing new to learn. I get my tankie content on Lemmy and magat content on YouTube. I know what the people I disagree with disagree about. I know what their arguments are, why they are wrong(and sometimes partially right), and what to say if they do want to discuss.

[-] Irelephant@lemm.ee 41 points 1 week ago

I hate tankies, but the block button is free.

[-] nimble@lemmy.blahaj.zone 35 points 1 week ago

The instance blocks hexbear and lemmygrad. I also just block .ml on my account.

[-] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago

I mostly hang out on this instance, and I legit see more imperialist liberals than Tankies. I always push back against bullshit, but I don't see the problems you speak of.

Get out of .ml ffs! Just don't go there!

I constantly see liberals calling anyone left of Reagan a "tankie"

[-] Mothra@mander.xyz 20 points 1 week ago

That's OK OP, I don't entirely agree with your personal perspective but I do encourage you to stand up for your values and if this is what you experience then more power to you for cutting ties. Good luck with your endeavors

[-] j4k3@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I don't know where people see and experience this, but I have tried other instances and only really like this account on dot world for daily use with Alexandrite, (no offense to anyone else's front ends). This only shows down votes when they go below zero. I also have a bunch of people and communities blocked.

My feed and interactions are all quite pleasant and when they are not, it only happens once.

I look at it like all open source projects, I have to make a little more effort on my own to manage me, but the payoff is worth it.

Regardless, thanks for being a part of this place. I wish you happy travels and days wherever you're headed. Sure this place is smaller, but I chose freedom and autonomy with friends.

[-] glizzyguzzler@lemmy.blahaj.zone 17 points 1 week ago

On blahaj we lack downvote so the tankies aren’t downvoted to hell from our point of view. It only keeps their circlejerk upvotes.

But if you look at the comments from another instance, they are downvoted to hell.

[-] Walk_blesseD@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 week ago

I do wonder why we're still federated with instances that routinely neglect to moderate against genocide denial.

Idk, I guess I don't understand why the threadiverse seems to have a much higher bar for defederating badly modded instances than microblogging fedi.

[-] daniskarma@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Why go argue with tankies if you don't like that?

I feel like this may be your fault. Two do not argue if one does not want to.

Engage in other kind of conversations and you'll be fine.

If you are bad here because of that you'll be bad everywhere. Anywhere you go you'll probably find someone to argue in an unpleasant manner.

[-] Taalnazi@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

What are you on about? Most aren't tankies or fascists here, and certainly don't worship dictatorships. You might wanna change your feed.

A good tip is to not interact with trolls, but to report and ignore instead.

[-] TGhost@lemm.ee 13 points 1 week ago

Its really fast to just ignore comment and do a report + block. After a time, the experience is good.

Me I'm more upset with libs idea everywhere and biggots, racists etc..

[-] Makhno@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

What a fucking drama queen lmao Grow tf up

[-] daggermoon@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

The North Korea, China, and Russia dick sucking is real but why are you arguing with them to begin with? Just ignore them. I saw the same thing on reddit too, I don't think this is a lemmy problem. It's a people need to go the fuck outside problem. I, myself need to get out more. The internet is a place where people who are bored post their dumbass opinions unfiltered. Just play a video game or watch a movie or something. Or go out for a walk.

Edit: Horror seems like a bit of a stretch

[-] TGhost@lemm.ee 12 points 1 week ago

Oh I checked the user profile.

Just want to say finally :

OK bye bye,

[-] python@programming.dev 10 points 1 week ago

I don't think I argued with a single Tankie in my entire time here, and literally was on hexbear because they had the biggest fitness community at the time.

Seems like a you problem lol

[-] ReversalHatchery@beehaw.org 10 points 1 week ago

I joined lemmy after reddit API changes

that wasn't 2 years ago. it's 1 and a few months

OP if you're going to engage with rage baiting trolls you're going to have an awful time on every platform. Possibly even get banned from some of them. The problem isn't Lemmy, the problem is you and how you choose to react and engage with the trolls. Stop feeding the trolls.

[-] shapesandstuff@feddit.org 8 points 1 week ago

It would not last even a week until I got into my first argument with a tankie. I saw them and argued with them from time to time on reddit, but people there usually saw right through the bullshit and downvoted them to oblivion.

I just had one of these interactions. The whole thread was like that.
I still enjoy the platform, but you gotta be very selective with whom you choose to engage.
Absolute insane trolling, fighting the sources not the arguments, then sharing archived banned tweets as their sources :D There's no winning.
The only upside so far is that the right wing nuts seem to be rarer here, but tankies are the same thing with a different flavor.

[-] Alwaysnownevernotme@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

You will not be missed

[-] allo@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

for comparison my day was cute and fun cuz i made unicorn art UwU UwU :)

[-] AVincentInSpace@pawb.social 3 points 1 week ago

I hear ya. I saw more trolls in my first 4 months on Lemmy than in 4 years on Reddit.

I completely understand.

I’m sick of seeing people like this in my feed and my blocklists are crazy long.
