Nope, Not Arabic (hexbear.net)
submitted 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) by Prof_mu3allim@hexbear.net to c/chapotraphouse@hexbear.net

How does a campaign make a mistake like this?

From https://notarabic.com/

Edit: there seems to be some confusion about what is wrong with this, I guess we really need those Arabic lessons smh. See my comments or the link @MolotovHalfEmpty@hexbear.net posted.

Ignorant question, but is the font bad or is it just a bad Google translate?

Tbh I wouldn't complain about the font, feels like nitpicking to me.

[-] ProfessorOwl_PhD@hexbear.net 27 points 3 days ago

The thing is Arabic is never written non-cursively. The equivalent for English would be if there was a space between every single letter.

Yes ofc, it's kinda funny that you are telling me this lol. I am here to teach you Arabic people! /jk comrade heart-sickle

Complaining about the font being bad is like complaining because someone used Times New Roman. Any Arabic font is cursive, otherwise it's not an Arabic font.

You are back, professor! When can we start learning Arabic again?

[-] Prof_mu3allim@hexbear.net 8 points 2 days ago

I never actually left, I just use my regular account :D We'll start tomorrow, if not today. And I'll make sure to ping you catgirl-salute

Are there modules that we can go through?

I might be interested in learning some of the broad word structure, tenses, essential prepositions and conjunctions, and other "first 1000 words" stuff. I don't have the time or mental energy for daily tutoring though.

[-] Prof_mu3allim@hexbear.net 1 points 19 hours ago

I forgot to reply, sorry! No I don't have any such modules.

I was looking around for charts or explainers for the different inflections/morpheme additions that change the specific significance of an Arabic word, similar to how for French and Spanish, for any class of verb, you can have a chart where you input the root and you get every tense and conjugation of the verb.

I found these two lessons, which were helpful but not a full explanation of what I was looking for.

I've been meaning to learn arabics for some time now

That is what I like to hear! We'll probably start tomorrow, and I'll make sure to ping you.

The first Arabic word, for example, should look like this التصويت, but the software printed it from left to right and did not connect the letters, so it came out as ت ي و ص ت ل ا (without the spaces)

The Arabic script is written from right to left and in cursive.

[-] ButtBidet@hexbear.net 12 points 3 days ago

I might be wrong, but one advantage to being a language far from English is that AI and machine translation is much worse. Translator friends of mine from smaller countries seem less stressed about all of it.

[-] anarchoilluminati@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago

Is there such a thing as non-cursive Arabic script?

[-] Prof_mu3allim@hexbear.net 5 points 2 days ago

Nope, cursive is the only way to write Arabic.

[-] Erika3sis@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago

I don't speak Arabic but I figured from two of the lines ending in lam-alif (al- backwards) that what had probably happened is that the whole thing is written backwards

[-] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 1 points 2 days ago

I think it's what happens when you have RTL text that gets copied or stored, character for character, and then pasted into a LTR format.

[-] TankieTanuki@hexbear.net 9 points 3 days ago

It's misconstrued macaroni art.

[-] ButtBidet@hexbear.net 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I'm not arguing with you, as I have no fucking clue about any of this. But some human dude must have done this. It must have been meaningful text at some point in the pipeline.

edit: sorry I'm caffeinated af and a bit aggressive.

[-] TankieTanuki@hexbear.net 9 points 3 days ago

Is this your third cup?

[-] KimJongGoku@hexbear.net 8 points 3 days ago

I'm ignorant about this as well, but the site the op links says this:

What is happening? Computers are designed to handle the subset of the Latin script required to manipulate American English first and foremost. Every other writing system is an afterthought, and Arabic is particularly poorly served. Most of the images in this archive are the result of non-Arab graphic designers pasting Arabic text into mainstream graphic design software that cannot handle anything but Latin characters and not checking with a native speaker.

So it sounds like pasting actual Arabic text into a context that does not fully support it might cause this

because her entire platform is the typical vibes based social democracy that lives and breathes on tokenism

[-] threethan@reddthat.com 2 points 2 days ago

IIRC these were sent out by some fucking fashies to make people afraid of her because Arabic=Bad.

The point is to scare crackers.

[-] quarrk@hexbear.net 7 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Perhaps it’s clever opposition strategy to make her seem more ~~woke~~ based than she actually is?

[-] RedWizard@hexbear.net 22 points 3 days ago

It's far more likely her team is very white and they didn't have anyone on staff who cared about getting it right let alone have the ability to actually read and write Arabic.

[-] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

You don't even have to speak/read/write Arabic to be able to tell if it looks like Arabic text or not. It takes just a few hours of observing it to move past the stage of "it's one of those scripts with the basic squiggles and dots around them" level of understanding.
