the only thing it measures is how good you are at taking an IQ test

The axis need to be swapped.

[-] amon@lemmy.world 14 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

the punchline is that if you pay for the iq test you are instantly considered stupid and if you bribe the iq test you get a high score. everyone in between won't pay for an iq test

[-] flamingo_pinyata@sopuli.xyz 11 points 2 weeks ago

The moment you pay for an IQ test - you failed it

[-] shneancy@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

tbf, i paid for an IQ test because i needed the results to prove i'm capable of understanding my own gender in court. Pretty whack but i heard recently the laws in my country changed so i hope younger trans people won't have to go through that humiliation

I think the same thing applies to Mensa. If you’re paying to join the “smart people club”, how smart are you really?

[-] Lvdwsn@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

My local Mensa hosts a lot of fun events, the cost is minimal, and it replaces a social vacuum left by religious activities for me. A wide variety of people, most very nice, almost all pretty interesting. Also a pretty insular group of folks that doesn’t really ruffle any feathers, so I’ve always been a little unsure why Mensa gets such hate online.

[-] Thekingoflorda@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Because it gives off a bit of an elitist vibe to require an IQ test for entry.

[-] Lvdwsn@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Don’t most special interest clubs have some sort of barrier to entry? Is Mensa different because IQ tests are a touchy subject that has been used incorrectly by bad actors? I can promise you that there is no illusion of superiority amongst the mensans I’ve met, we’re all pretty on board with “we’re just good at the things that IQ tests measure” and if anything it just helps a lot of us apply some additional context and understanding to oftentimes difficult childhood memories. Just my two cents from the other side!

Yup. You can practice for it like any other test. There's no way to score human intelligence, except anyone who talks about having high IQ, then you know they are unintelligent.

[-] ambidexterity@lemmy.world -1 points 2 weeks ago

IQ also has other use cases

[-] 9point6@lemmy.world 26 points 2 weeks ago

Anyone that cares about an IQ result is a permanent clown that deserves to be laughed at until they're dust

[-] Sergio@slrpnk.net 16 points 2 weeks ago

When I was a kid I took a two-page IQ test in a Reader's Digest and I got 125. It meant a lot to me.

[-] Shellbeach@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

Me too! I got 128 and it defined me for a long time. I'm more iq'd than you. Yesss, here's my time to shine again, finally

[-] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 6 points 2 weeks ago

As someone with a higher and more officialler result than you IDIOTS I can assure you that I am also an idiot.

[-] Big_Boss_77@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 2 weeks ago

We're all idiots on this blessed day

[-] DakRalter@thelemmy.club 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Same! I still have the certificate!

(Although I would have got 129 if my sister, who couldn't spell, kept insisting that "than" is spelt "then" and wouldn't stop bugging me throughout the whole test until I changed it, even though I knew she was wrong. Yes I am still bitter about it today.)

I lack real world intelligence, so bog all use that test was.

[-] Lasherz12@lemmy.world 22 points 2 weeks ago

I find it hard to believe someone can recognize patterns well enough to do well on an IQ test could also be so stupid as to not realize everyone hates him and just wants his money.

[-] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 weeks ago

I wouldn't be surprised if he's actually just kind of dumb, but humans are really bad at recognizing patterns relating to ourselves. There's a reason therapists see other therapists, for example.

[-] currycourier@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

I mean for what its worth emotional intelligence (recognizing everyone hates you and just wants your money) is a whole different thing. That said, I'm pretty sure he's just an idiot in general too. Maybe smarter than the average person, but certainly not three standard deviations smarter.

[-] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 21 points 2 weeks ago

He's also "good at Diablo" or whatever it was. And "really smart about business." And "really smart about rockets." And blah blah blah. It's all bullshit. Just listen to him. He can barely form coherent sentences.

[-] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago

My IQ test done through school came back with super high results. I’m 33 and work part time at a bakery while on my fourth year of a two year program. It doesn’t fucking matter.

[-] son_named_bort@lemmy.world 11 points 2 weeks ago

I took a IQ test online it said I Genius.

[-] PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 weeks ago

Has anyone here actually had a real IQ test? They’re administered by psychologists and it takes like 2-3 days of different tests. No one doing any online test is doing a real IQ test. Not that they’re the end all be all for intelligence anyways.

[-] darksiderbun@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago

I took one as a kid, my parents had all of us tested. I was always told I was smart but they never told me the number. Just that "you can do anything you put your mind to". I literally didn't know I was taking an IQ test and have no memories of what it was like other than the person doing the test was a lady and she had me doing something with wooden blocks. This was all as a prerequisite to get into some gifted program. They lost my results for a bit so I didn't get in until second grade (USA) so it had to be some time in first grade or before. I won't spell out my life story here, so I'll stop there. Anyway yeah that was my experience with it.

[-] PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

Similar to mine! School psychologist with blocks, asking me about fluid ounces, and then about how similar or different things were (ended at time and space). Didn’t really feel like a test but I was in Grade 5.

My parents thought I was cognitively challenged so they had the test administered (I got an F in math in grade 4). Turns out I’m just ADHD.

[-] hopeleft@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 2 weeks ago

It's very likely, tho honestly even if he had an iq of 300 i wouldn't care if things he says will remain bullshit.

[-] jonne@infosec.pub 8 points 2 weeks ago

And who's saying he's got a high IQ? Presumably it's just him saying he does, and he lies about everything else.

[-] LordWiggle@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

I bet his test results are a different scale, like imperial, but converted to normal metric standards he scores below average. Everything he says and does shows he really wants people to believe he's smart and he's willing to lie as much as needed to make people believe him, but he never actually shows anything of actual intelligence. On the contrary really.

[-] WatDabney@fedia.io 12 points 2 weeks ago

Musk never outgrew 8th grade.

He's still in there, day in and day out, doing everything he can think of to try to get the other kids to think he's cool, and still just making himself look like that much more of a creepy, pathetic douchebag.

[-] Paragone@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

if Musk's got a high intellect-quotient, that's fine..

What does it measure?

A very-specific subset of intelligences, crafted to leave-out female relational-intelligences, musical-intelligence, health-intelligence, among other ones..

https://www.amazon.com/Seven-Kinds-Smart-Identifying-Intelligences/dp/0452281377/

identifies 9 intelligences, & I defy most Mensa-types to consistently score high on those other ones..

It is the IQ lobby which won't tolerate the other-intelligences to be counted equally-valid, right?

With reason: they aren't good at those intelligences.

( hint: musical-intelligence includes multiple sub-intelligences, including, but not limited-to..

  • rhythm
  • harmony
  • melody
  • improv/jazz
  • composition
  • polyrhythm
  • etc..

A person can have a "musical intelligence" of whatever, & be brilliant in rhythm, but lousy in harmony, xor vice versa.

Too-coarse-granularity's consistently a problem with these damn measures : )
