And even older than Polaris, the north star. It's only 70 million years old.

[-] lemming@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 days ago

Also older than the rings of Saturn

[-] CaptainBlagbird@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

The brightest of the three stars in the Polaris system at least.

Well, Polaris is made up of three stars and only one of them is estimated to be younger than sharks. Still cool, though.

Jellyfish, which are older than bones and eyes: "pathetic"

[-] Chee_Koala@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

"Am I a joke to you?"

[-] regdog@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

This statement does not make sense. If they only survived 4 out of 5 extinction events then there should be no more sharks alive today.

[-] scholar@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago

They weren't around yet during the first one

[-] regdog@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

OK, I think I get it now. But it sounds a bit confusing. If you are listing events that sharks were not present for, then you might as well say something like Sharks survived the Big Bang

[-] princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 1 day ago

Kind of? It's referencing a well known set of mass extinctions that are talked about together, the 'Big Five', but it also is worded poorly. Instead something like "Sharks have survived the most recent four of the 'Big Five' mass extinction events." might be better?

Is this why we're trying boil the oceans and make them toxic?

[-] ieatpwns@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

Only way to beat primordial horrors beyond our comprehension

[-] KingJalopy@lemm.ee 17 points 2 days ago

False

JK obv

JK obv

Did you get married recently? You should sign it,

JK Obv (née Row)

so people know who you are ;p

[-] KingJalopy@lemm.ee 7 points 18 hours ago

I've read this so many times but I just don't get it. What do you mean?

[-] milicent_bystandr@lemm.ee 3 points 13 hours ago

Your signature, "JK obv", where obv is obviously short for Obviously; related to "JK row", where row is of course short for Rowling.

If it were two 'Rowlings', you might be sisters. But being two 'JK's, by logical deduction you must be the same person, having recently married and taken your husband's surname, Mr. Obv(iously).

Hence, your expanded name, "JK Obv née Row"

Flawless logic.

[-] KingJalopy@lemm.ee 2 points 7 hours ago

Yeah... Not sure how I missed that...

It was so obv

[-] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

Deeper than the mountains... older than the trees...?

John Denver was singing about sharks?

[-] SpruceBringsteen@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

It's hard to fathom the cultural sensation that was Jaws and the deep effect it had on Denver.

[-] double_quack@lemm.ee 6 points 2 days ago

Older than Saturn's rings!

[-] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 days ago

I thought it was crocodiles that were the oldest, turns out it’s sharks, specifically Greenland shark

[-] Naz@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

Thanks, I learned something today

[-] rockerface@lemm.ee 4 points 2 days ago

To clarify, "older than trees" doesn't mean older than currently living trees. It means older than the very first trees. As in, before plants figured out how to grow wood.

[-] huf@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago

pff, that's nothing. how many have they caused?

cos we've been around only a few million years and we've already caused one

[-] woodenghost@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago

Older than the star Polaris.

[-] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago
[-] MelonYellow@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

Sharks and crocs gotta outlive us all man. It would be such a tragedy if they don’t and it was our fault
