Yesterday I posted about rss.ponder.cat, with communities automatically fed from a selection of RSS feeds. Today I made !meta@rss.ponder.cat, with:

  • A sticky-post roadmap of the RSS feeds that are already available
  • A place for people to request communities to be added
  • A place for me to post announcements about new communities

I don't plan to spam !newcommunities@lemmy.world with every new RSS feed, but I figured I would let people know the location of the community that will get announcements about new RSS feed communities, in case they want to subscribe to it.

Cheers!

We all know that content discoverability can be challenging on Lemmy.

!newcommunities@lemmy.world is a space dedicated about new and active communities.

We started a weekly thread yesterday about active communities (the requirement is to have at least one post in the last week), feel free to have a look at it and see if there are communities that might interest you!

This community has also been highlighted on Lemmy.world to increase its visibility

Hello,

As everybody knows, content discovery on Lemmy can sometimes be a bit tricky.

To help smaller communities to get more activity, I launch this thread for people to promote the communities they are active one.

One important criteria: please only promote communities that have been at least one post in the last 7 days. And if there is none, feel free to post there and then promote it here!

This could be a weekly thread, but let's see how it goes

Finally, !newcommunities@lemmy.world and !communitypromo@lemmy.ca are communities that you can subscribe to to see updates about communities

Whenever I try to view the threads page of newcommunities@lemmy.world (i.e., https://kbin.social/m/newcommunities@lemmy.world), I get an error. It's only kbin.social where this happens, and it's only the threads page of this specific community. I can view the microblogs, the people, and even individual threads, but the threads page throws an error for some reason. Any idea what's causing this?

🌐 Instances to look through

You can find communities from specific instances

A great way to find lesser known communities is to look at the /communities page on an instance. Different instances may have different themes or focuses, and so you can find related communities that way.

For example: https://lemmy.ca/communities

  • pangora.social: Great way to find instances related to a particular topic. This is also great for picking an instance when first making an account/moving accounts.
  • awesome-lemmy-instances

Asking this to the general audience because that's a comment I've seen quite a lot recently.

So, let's start with a list of communities that could be interesting to a wide audience, sorted by monthly active users (MAU), the most active being on top.

Those numbers may seem low, but remember that those are active users, who at least commented or posted in the last month. So even if you are afraid to be shouting to the abyss, there will be other people next to you to keep the ball rolling.

Also, please note that those communities are suffering from the current tedious discoverability of new content on Lemmy. I'm hoping to make them more popular with this post, as I'm sure those are topics that can interest a lot of people.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Lemmy cannot replace 18 years of content creation overnight. It will take time for those communities to grow to the same level of content and activity than there counterpart, but with a bit of time, we'll get there.

In addition, there are a few places to look out for new communities.

The first place to look for is https://lemmyverse.net, but Lemmy.world communities are currently excluded for some reason (https://github.com/tgxn/lemmy-explorer/issues/139).

A second place is this community: !newcommunities@lemmy.world. People tend to promote their communities there, you can also ask for a community you are looking for.

Finally, !trendingcommunities@feddit.nl provides a daily report of communities becoming popular.

It was lagging the instance quite a bit, and really isn't necessary given the amount of active users we have now and the communities already federated in.

If you want to see new communities that might not be federated yet though, per usual feel free go to https://lemmyverse.net or !newcommunities@lemmy.world

57k active users on Lemmy, Casual Conversation seems a pretty common topic, and still there aren't that many people around here.

I posted on !newcommunities@lemmy.world , we are probably the most populous community with this name.

Maybe it's because LemmyWorld communities do not appear on Lemmyverse.net any more?

What do you think could be the issue?

12
11

So, to explain in more detail: I read about a new community on newcommunities and I decided to search for it so that it started federating with Kbin.

However, when I visit the community on lemmy.world, there are already 32 posts from before the community became visible on kbin, but I can only see the posts that were made after I "discovered" the community on Kbin.

As Lemmy starts maturing, there starts being so many communities out there that it's pretty hard to keep track. I've been browsing for about a month now, here's a list of popular communities I've subscribed to that others would find interesting!

Not many of these were noticeable while browsing communities so you may have missed some of these. I've roughly ranked these based on which I'd spend the most time on in each category.

Also note that I would add Kbin communities as well, but federation between Lemmy and Kbin is still not working well, so right now this post is for Lemmy communities only!

And that's it. Whew. Obviously I might have missed some, but these are the most interesting communities for me.

Step 1 is to go to the Magazines tab at the top of the page, and start browsing what our local instance here has to offer. But if you want to explore the wider world of the threadiverse, check out the list below:

Tip: How to subscribe to lemmy communities on kbin

Kbin Link, a browser extension that adds an icon next to links to lemmy communities to easily allow you to open the associated kbin magazine

Communities/Magazines
These communities are focused on helping people find, discover, and promote niche communities.

Websites
These sites are external, easy-to-browse directories of communities.

Special Interest Instances
You can go to the Communities tab on any of these sites and find niche communities to subscribe to. This is not an exhaustive list and doesn't include any location-specific or language-specific instances.

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/855849

m/dance was created very recently on kbin.social and has only a few posts. Still, if I search for its URL on lemmy.world it is visible and I can subscribe, though I can't see any of the posts: https://lemmy.world/c/dance@kbin.social

I recently created the community c/survey_polls on lemmy.world, but when I search for it on kbin.social it is not visible. I can see the cross-posts I made on c/general and c/newcommunities, and looking at my profile through kbin.social my first post to c/survey_polls also doesn't seem to be visible.

My point is, what communities/posts are or aren't visible across lemmy.world and kbin.social? Do posts from one website only appear on the other if the community already has subscribers? Or is there some sort of time threshold?

I don't know if it's possible on sh.itjust.works, or if it's better to ask this to Lemmy devs directly, but would it be possible to detect and convert automatically links to communities and posts so that when clicking on them, we are redirected to them in sh.itjust.works view of them, being able to interact with them ?

Example: detect that c/main@sh.itjust.works or !main@sh.itjust.works are lemmy community links, and so, HTMLify them to link to https://sh.itjust.works/c/main@sh.itjust.works

Another example: c/newcommunities@lemmy.world or !newcommunities@lemmy.world to be transformed as a link to https://sh.itjust.works/c/newcommunities@lemmy.world

This does not need to know what url are lemmy or not, simply having an url beginning with "c/" or "/c/" or "!" and containing a "@" could be transformed to a clickable link, without needing the user to do copy paste and changing and stuff to access the link that can be provided by any other users on other federations

Current best way is for the user that post a message, to write the link in this format [some title](/c/xxx@fede.xx), other formats will not be recognized, and full urls beginning with http will change the website (so we are no more able to act).

So you signed up on one of many Lemmy instances, and now you want to start joining communities you are interested in.

There are a few ways to do so...

Using the Communities page:

The most obvious one... Communities link at the top of the page.
Once you are on the Communities page, you will see 3 tabs:

  • Subscribed - obvious enough
  • Local - communities that are made on your instance
  • All - a bit misleading because these are not actually all communities, but rather all communities that have been fetched by your instance so far.

Browsing the front page:

More specifically, browsing the front page with the filter set to All (Subscribed | Local | All)
If you are on a fairly popular instance, you will most likely run into posts from all kinds of new communities as other people from your instance fetch them.

Using the community browsers:

These websites index communities across all instances, and you can use them to search for remote communities.

In order to subscribe to or even see remote communities (communities hosted on other instances), they have to be fetched by your instance.

How to fetch them:

  • Copy the link to the community you want to fetch.
  • Go to the Communities page on your instance and set the filter to All.
  • Paste the link in the search field and click the Search button.
  • When the text saying "No results" under the Search button disappears, that means that the community has been successfully fetched by your instance (it can take a bit longer to fetch it, especially if the instance is overloaded).
  • That's it! Now you can delete the URL from the search field and find the community by its name.

Browsing the communities that promote new communities:

There are a few different communities that you can use to find new and interesting ones.
Some of them:

Browsing Kbin magazines (communities):

Process of subscribing to Kbin magazines is the same as subscribing to remote Lemmy communities.
If you go to https://kbin.social/magazines (or any other kbin instance and add /magazines at the end), you can browse and search for magazines.
To subscribe to one of them, follow the "How to fetch them" instruction from above.

What is Lemmy?

One great way to understand Lemmy is to check out this simple infographic (author: @ulu_mulu@lemmy.world)

But if you want it in text form:

Lemmy is a link aggregator, in many ways similar to Reddit, but with one key difference - there is no one central authority controlling Lemmy. The code is open source, and more importantly, there are hundreds of Lemmy instances which are all independently run.

Even though instances are independent, they are all part of the Lemmy network, and thus, users of one instance can participate in communities of other instances.

What is an instance?

Lemmy instances are servers which run the Lemmy software. https://lemm.ee (where this post lives on) is one instance, but there are also many others.

There can be several key differences in instances:

  • Some instances are small and run out of home servers, some instances are large and run on commercial hardware (lemm.ee is one of the latter)
  • Each instance can define their own set of rules (lemm.ee rules are visible in the sidebar on our front page)
  • Instances can decide whether downvotes are enabled for their users (lemm.ee users have the ability to downvote)
  • Some instances may choose to limit community creation to admins only (lemm.ee allows all users to create communities)
  • Some instances have a tight focus, others are general-purpose (lemm.ee is the latter!)

If you ever find yourself unhappy with your instance, you are always free to create an account on another one and continue using Lemmy. Unlike centralized platforms, you always have another place to go!

⚠️ Lemmy supports migrating your account from one instance to another, which makes it quite painless to move. However, your post history will remain on your old account when you create a new one on another instance.

How do I join a community from another instance?

Option 1: go to the list of communities by clicking the "Communities" link on the top navbar. Open the "All" tab and you will be able to browse and subscribe to any community from other instances that at least one lemm.ee user has previously subscribed to.

Option 2: if you know the exact name of the community you wish to join (for example, !gaming@beehaw.org), you can navigate to the search view by clicking the looking glass icon on the top navbar. Enter the exact name of the community into the search box, including the leading "!": [!gaming@beehaw.org](/c/gaming@beehaw.org). If at least one person from lemm.ee has previously subscribed to this community, then you should immediately see a link to open the community and subscribe to it.

Important caveat: if you are the first person to search for a community, then Lemmy will initially tell you that no results were found. Don't worry, if the community exists, then lemm.ee will begin syncing it and you will be able to successfully search for it again in a couple of minutes.

Important caveat 2: if you are the first lemm.ee user to subscribe to a community from another instance, then historical posts and comments will not be immediately synced. This is a limitation of the Lemmy software currently. However, if old posts start getting some new activity after you've subscribed (like a new comment or edit), then that will trigger a sync and the old posts should start showing up for you as well.

How can I find interesting communities?

You have several options!

  • You can browse our list of all communities. This includes any communities from other instances which have at least one subscriber from lemm.ee.
  • You can check for ads for interesting communities in !newcommunities@lemmy.world
  • You can check out https://lemmyverse.net - bonus tip, if you set your home instance on this website, then all community links will lead to your home instance!

Why are image uploads on lemm.ee limited to 500kb?

One of the scaling issues so far with Lemmy is multimedia storage. Several instances report growing their storage by significant amounts daily - if lemm.ee grew at that same pace, I would start seeing increased infrastructure bills very quickly (within months, if not weeks).

To help mitigate this, users are asked to use external image hosting providers as much as possible. On lemm.ee, we currently only allow image uploads for images up to 500kb in size.

500kb was specifically chosen as it SHOULD cover most needs for any avatars, and possibly even simple banners for communities.

How can I post images hosted on external services?

For posts, just submit the image URL directly (in other words, copy the image URL into the "URL" field of the post you are creating).

Additionally, for text posts and comments, you can use the following syntax: ![alt text](image url), for example ![lemm.ee logo](https://imgur.com/earIilI.png) results in:

lemm.ee logo

How can I ensure my community on lemm.ee gets found on other instances?

  • First of all, you should ensure that your community looks welcoming to new users. If your sidebar has useful info and there's perhaps some activity in the community already, then new users are much more likely to subscribe
  • Once you have your new community set up, your community will soon become automatically visible in our local communities list at lemm.ee, as well as the global community indexes like https://browse.feddit.de or https://lemmyverse.net
  • If you want even more exposure for your community, I recommend making a post about it in !newcommunities@lemmy.world

How can I take over a community with inactive mods on lemm.ee?

  1. Make a post in the community you want to take over
  2. DM me (@sunaurus) 1-2 sentences about what your plans are for the community, and a link to the post you made in the community

If the community you want really has no active mods, then I will be happy to pass ownership to you!

I’m still lost, how can I get assistance?

If you feel like anything in this guide is unclear, or if you have a general question which you believe will be useful to others in the future, please just drop a comment with your question under this post and myself or other helpful members of our community can try and help you out.

If you're having any issues that you feel are not relevant as a comment here, then feel free to post a thread and tag me in our !support community.

Rules

The rules may be more established as time goes on, but it's important to have a foundation to work on.

1. Follow the rules of Lemmy.world - These rules are the same as Mastodon.world's rules, which can be found here.

2. Include a community title and description in your post title. - A following example of this would be New Communities - A place to post new communities all over Lemmy for discovery and promotion.

3. Follow the formatting. - The formatting as included below is important for people getting universal links across Lemmy as easily as possible.

Formatting

Please include this following format in your post:

[link text](/c/community@instance.com)

This provides a link that should work across instances, but in some cases it won't

You should also include either:

!community@instance.com

or instance.com/c/community

FAQ:

Q: Why do I get a community not found message?

A: At least one user in an instance needs to search for a community before it gets fetched. Searching for the community will bring it into the instance and it will fetch a few of the most recent posts without comments. If a user is subscribed to a community, then all of the future posts and interactions are now in-sync.

*Q: Why isn't the link working on kbin.social?"

A: This is a community for Lemmy, there is a universal link for Lemmy, but when this universal link works on kbin. It turns out like the below.

https://kbin.social/c/newcommunities@lemmy.world/

Simply replace the c with an m for kbin.social like shown below.

https://kbin.social/m/newcommunities@lemmy.world/

*Q: When I try to create a post, the circle just spins forever. Why is that? *

A: (This may be removed soon as it is seems to be happening less often now.) This is a current known issue with large communities. Sometimes it does get posted, but just continues spinning, but sometimes it doesn't get posted and continues spinning. If it doesn't actually get posted, the best thing to do is try later. However, only some people seem to be having this problem at the moment.

Cross-Posting

On Lemmy you can use the the built in cross post function to link viewers of one post to another. This lets users quickly see what people in other communities are saying and also has the potential to expose someone to something new. For community owners this is a great way to go about seeding discussion in new communities.

Example:

Thanks to this post and creator for this tip!
