Literally got him cancelled off ABC too over that. It was Dinesh D'souza who wasn't disagreeing very strongly if at all if I recall. His show was I think called "politically incorrect" and in that case it definitely was.

The prosecutors also had every cop in NYC perp walk the dude and surely were aware of the broken chain of evidence on the backpack so I'm not inclined to believe anything they say

Probably not, my guess is he did not say it, but they are trying to use this to plant evidence and poison any jury pool, and TRY to make him guilty in the court of public opinion.
