Steam being a US-based company kinda put a damper on my willingness to shell out the moolah for games I might not even play ...
GOG is my go to. Still have a huge steam library from before but my future purchases are going there.

TBH for me, between the sales and the Linux compatibility it's still worth it even if I'm effectively renting the games.

They've tried, they've listened, they've not gone forward with the implementation, apologized and refunded and everyone else moved on.

Except they didn't apologize and according to them adding paid mods was not a mistake, their mistake was starting with skyrim. I think it's funny how enamoured people are with steam to the point of misremembering what really happened.

My rule is I can't buy a game unless I am going to play it that same day.
Even in cases where the rule causes me to miss a sale and end up buying the game later, I'm sure it still saves me money, and - more importantly - saves a tremendous amount of regret and stress caused by buying games that would just sit my library unplayed.
I've adopted this same strategy. I've bought maybe 2 games in the last couple years. I haven't been hyped for a Steam sale in over 5 years

I've got like... 3 games I'll get at the moment, one's not even going to be on pc for like 6 months, another isn't out to next month and the other just came out so probably won't be on sale :l
I've been making a huge dent in my library since last year. I've fully completed over half of my 200+ library. I shouldn't, but will probably get some new games to add to the decreasing backlog so that I can have more backlog to play! :P
I do not buy if I really really want the game., so, there are many games in my library that I haven't played because I got them free
