On this week this niche leftist forum was first launched (its was the 24th or 25th i think) Formed from the Chapotraphouse subreddit remnants that survived the reddit ban over the calls of violence against confederate slave owners, the first admins decided to use Lemmy as its base. Originally called Chapo.chat (ChaCha) Hexbear has grown into one of the biggest instances in the lemmyverse.

In this last 5 years hexbear has survived many diffent events from numerous struggle sessions, mod clique-users conflicts, wrecker incursions from other instances and sites, this image dprk-soldier, a decent amount of fedidrama with other instances and the domain crisis, we still thrive with over 5 million comments and 375k posts.

I still continue my dictatorial rule over the general megathread for now over 4 years now, this time locked in the chapo comm so it can be more easily moderated, c/indigenous has now grown to 750 subs which im very happy plus now i take care of the empoc mega which has been pretty chill so far.

I still really enjoy the fedidrama, it fun to see all the fedilibs always thinking about hexbear despide the fact that they are on defederated instances and they can ust ignore us, we live rent free on their minds

Last week I hurt my ankle going to the tower, so this week im taking it easy and hanging out with the bees at the flower floor park. Watching this big native bee just taking flowers and rolling around on the ground with them. Tons of smaller honeybee and native bees around doing the same thing.

Someone give Richard Wolff a crash course on VTubers so he can parachute into the VShojo fallout, radicalize the talents, and get them to form a VTuber cooperative.

I'm half-joking—doubt any of the talents would want to join an organization after all that mess—but I would really like to see co-ops in the VTuber sphere. I'm also genuinely curious about how such an org would be structured, since there are two natural levels of inequality: differences in income/clout between streamers, and an imbalance of power/wealth between streamers and staff, both of which can be substantial. Would it be more suited to a dual-org system, where the staff forms a workers co-op and the streamers form a consumer co-op? I professional my ignorance about the nitty-gritty of cooperative operations, so if anyone has any insight I'd love to hear it.

Actually I love the "character has far more progressive mindset than most people at that time" trope. Its pretty relatable at least.

Hell, there were christian monks who were against crusades at like 1100, a minority sure, but they existed!

I mean I think the incredible diversity of opinions in societies ancient or just foreign often get collapsed into the opinions of the ownership class of that society.

parenti had a great quote about that, I think it was in The Assassination of Julius Caesar, where he went on about how there was a huge group of people in ancient Rome who opposed slavery, but that their opinions were never recorded in any history books. They were called slaves.

[-] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 4 points 1 hour ago

Recently I heard Michael Hudson make the great point that much of what we know about Ancient Roman history was recorded by Cicero who was a flagrant reactionary.

After my dumbass mom sent me a text about Omar Fateh, a guy I literally don't know anything about, I decided to just randomly look him up on youtube. In order, I got:

  1. a local fox news video about him receiving an endorsement to be mayor of Minneapolis, the comments full of blatant racism
  2. a slander piece with a scummy gold-shilling ad in the description (lmao)
  3. the same local fox news video as the first video
  4. Matt Walsh crying about him
  5. another Matt Walsh video crying about him

So after this fun little example of consent manufacturing I still know nothing about this Omar Fateh guy after looking over the following 5 videos after those which also feature not a single video of this dude actually speaking for himself, except that Matt Walsh and my mom (and Sky News) hate him so he's probably at least kinda cool.

i fucking hate the spread of ai so much. i've noticed for a while now that in ddg wikipedia pages will now have an ai summary instead of just using the first sentence or two for their subheader when i have never heard of anyone having any problem with the old way. now search results from reddit will do the same thing. i think it's an unlabelled ddg thing because when i searched for the same thing on bing i didn't get the ai summary for the wiki page, though i did get the summary for the reddit page. the ai summary had a pretty big spoiler for the thing i was looking up too so i am glad i had finished it beforehand lol

[-] gramxi@hexbear.net 1 points 5 hours ago

browsing .ml comms and I'm noticing a user that reads like a lib parody of how they think we act. I guess it could just be an obnoxious shit-stirrer expressing genuine opinions, but I've been looking through profiles and it's obvious that there's a growing number of sockpuppets commenting in ways to make the position they allegedly support look as deranged as possible.

[-] tricerotops@hexbear.net 5 points 8 hours ago

what is Scaled supposed to do? As far as I can tell it's the same as new but sorted a little differently.

the wire season 2 spoilers, vague tokyo vice spoilersjust finished s2 of the wire, my first time watching the show. while i've enjoyed it a lot so far and it is definitely better written than most cop shows, i thought the way they killed off frank sobotka felt contrived and poorly written. i get that he had to die for the sake of the metaphor but he was a smart guy and he didn't seem at all like he wanted to die, so having him choose to go meet up with a bunch of gangsters under a fucking bridge right after talking to the cops felt like it was really dumb and out of character. reminded me of a similar thing towards or at the end of tokyo vice s1 which i thought was so dumb it made me stop watching the show altogether. i won't stop watching the wire but this felt like the first major misstep so far

[-] dougfir@hexbear.net 2 points 8 hours ago

spoileri also found it pretty unbelievable that the gangsters were apparently even entertaining the idea of giving them fake passports lol

[-] ClathrateG@hexbear.net 4 points 9 hours ago

I'm guessing its pretty zionist biased, but is Munich worth a watch?

[-] darkcalling@hexbear.net 2 points 6 hours ago

Worth a watch? Eh. Maybe. It's definitely zionist biased. Depends on what you want out of such a movie. It has been years but I recall pretty well some parts of it.

It does show the zionists doing questionable stuff in terms of innocents getting hurt though it's put down not to ghoulishness but inexperience of the operators from the very young "state" of "israel".

I suppose one could read it as them growing increasingly unhinged as the operation goes on, the whole liberal motif of the characters/audience questioning "are we becoming that which we swore to fight in our vengeance quest?" and the whole "it's complicated, good people on multiple sides for complex reasons but our side is really more justified" zionism propaganda angles are in full effect. It does show a crumb of humanity in the Arab/Palestinian side at a key point but it's mostly about the struggles of the zionist assassins and how hard it is blah blah blah and all the danger around them. It could have been more full-throated zionist propaganda but it wouldn't have been more effective if it had for pushing what they want.

The main characters are made to be standing above and outside the system they're operating on behalf of and made out to be more righteous and discerning than that system which is happier to have more blood on its hands and clashes with them at times, trying to exert more control.

If you think about artificial intelligence enough, you’ll quickly realize how “artificial” just means stolen lmao how foolish of me to assume a journalist somewhere would bring this up though

Tech oligarchs literally just dumped all the data on the internet into their models for fucking free. Idk why I’m surprised, of course that shit was going to happen under capitalism

cw cushposting (large-adult-son)

holy fuck i don't know if i watched the last cushvlog that came out literally days before matt's stroke at the time, but it is actually insanely veil piercing how relevant & prescient it is considering what happened. my lens for the world still very much defaults to thinking that sort of thing is coincidence, but jesus...

miss his insights and wisdom, but happy he seems to be recovering in his own way and carving out a new vision of happiness for himself. but could really use his analysis considering all the this-is-fine that's happened since...

this anime The Water Magician named a demon lady "Leonore Albuquerque" and I'm like "lol" but then I googled it and it turns out there was an Eleanor of Albuquerque who was the queen of Aragon for a bit

CW: Suicide, self harm

Still sober, but I'm cutting myself again. I've been thinking of just ending it everyday this week, I feel so worthless, like life is never going to get better because I'm not worth anything better. I don't even want to use right now, I just want to keep cutting my thigh until I bleed out.

[-] LeylaLove@hexbear.net 4 points 11 hours ago

Well I finally stopped cutting myself. I'm so tired of this shit. I'm so fucking tired.

You know I re4 whe. Youre at a safe spot on top of a ladder so you let the zomies get most of the way up, knock the ladder down and then shoot them while theyre re-setting the ladder? I felt like one of the zombies in that situation today

I think there's almost definitely a leak or some shit in the pipes to my house because my partner just paid the water bill and it was like $170 and it says it's basically $30 plus $7.69 for every 1000 gallons and idk but im pretty sure there's no way we're using 20,000 gallons of water a month

[-] PorkrollPosadist@hexbear.net 8 points 13 hours ago

TFW you find out the garden hose attached to the side of your house leads all the way to a local AI datacenter.

I've spent the past 2 decades of my life trying to emulate the lifestyle of an Epic Gentlesir and I have yet to achieve my ultimate dream: Winning the internet for the day obama-sad

[-] DoomBloomDialectic@hexbear.net 3 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

reject the hedonic treadmill: to win the internet today is to merely plant the seed of desire that longs to win the internet tomorrow, the next day, two weeks from now, a month, a year...

not even those in the highest echelons of powerposting can hope to reach such idealized heights. nor would such a thing be desirable even if possible b/c of its diminishing returns, the burning out of our dopamine receptors.

but to live, day-to-day, as a Good Gentlesir?? this is a path to longer-lasting, sustainable, gentler happiness - the steady, peaceful stream of contentment from a life well-lived trump-enlightened

I was shocked to learn that if you find a "sporting goods" store in a rural area in the West, it's not a store you go to get a soccer ball but instead one you get equipment to go kill animals with.

Apparently killing animals is "sports" to a subset of crackers.
