The American upper class has spent so long being shielded from the fallout of its actions that it believes itself invincible.

[-] zifnab25@hexbear.net 33 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

That's not a class issue nearly so much as it is an 83-year-olds be stubborn problem

[-] FnordPrefect@hexbear.net 80 points 8 months ago

What a perfect microcosm story for why we're completely screwed by climate collapse. People would complain about how heavy handed the symbolism is if this was in a movie

If it collapses and he survives, it'll be blamed on communist earthbenders. No introspection whatsoever. The commies sabotaged his perfectly safe mansion

[-] zed_proclaimer@hexbear.net 64 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Damn if I was 82 and had a giant beachside mansion I would stay in it too. Great way to go out, ride that sucker into hell.

[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 14 points 8 months ago

Probably same. I'd be too old to move to another house. Fuck that.

Wealthy old man biding his time while a landslide undercuts his support. Very uncommitted to doing anything about it. Where have I seen this before?

I've got a sneaking suspicion that they have somehow jacked up their insurance policy on the house and everything in it (or that they claim is in it) and are just going to use this as an excuse to rake it in on a property that's been doomed for some time now.

[-] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 37 points 8 months ago

how-much-could-it-cost imagine paying 16 million for a compound falling down a cliff side, lol, lmao

[-] Smeagolicious@hexbear.net 36 points 8 months ago

Motherfuckers like this are ruining coasts across the country. Well, really its land/real estate developers but its a huge issue in the Great Lakes area too where basically every inch of land near a coastline is snapped up and clear cut for mcmansion building, which destroys the trees and vegetation that held these cliffs together.

Seen dozens of houses slide down cliffs and i would cheer if not for the environmental destruction they caused in the first place sicko-wistful

[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 16 points 8 months ago

When I am in charge all bodies of water will be surrounded by an appropriate amount of park space before anyone can build anything that isn't a shipping port or yknow, stuff to do with boats. You shouldn't be able to effectively privatize a lake or because now the only way to access it is by trespassing.

Isn’t there a parable about a house built on sand? I wonder if that would be relevant.

California solidarity Florida

Otherwise being really good states that are unfortunately wasted on the wealthy.

[-] BoxedFenders@hexbear.net 16 points 8 months ago

California has incredible climate and geography, but Florida? It's a flat swamp with hellacious heat and humidity.

[-] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 19 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

But Everglades and Manatees, and you could make a case Miami is Caribbean-adjacent.

If I was in my 80s and someone said "move house or you might die", I'd seriously consider just rolling the dice on death.

Moving sucks so God damn much.
