Which means they are paying those plantation workers fair wages now

Right...

[-] chalupapocalypse@lemmy.world 77 points 7 months ago

Great now they are going to start stealing all the cocoa out of new construction

[-] werefreeatlast@lemmy.world 24 points 7 months ago

Where would they even sell it? The cocoa recycling centers won't take any cocoa without a wrapper and a receipt!

[-] huginn@feddit.it 42 points 7 months ago

Headline should be: copper cheaper than you thought

Cocoa being more expensive might be better paid workers and better living standards right?

I was stunned at how cheap copper is after being linked BigStackD on YouTube and watching him melt copper into a bunch of copper bars that ended up totaling like 35USD

[-] Dudewitbow@lemmy.zip 2 points 7 months ago

copper in the context of itself is actually pretty cheap. the problem copper has is that copper is reletively expensive when compared to other common metals, hence why in some industries, copper usage is being cut back more (e.g heatsinks, as copper is commonly used for its great heat transfer coefficient, but reletively speaking, is more expensive than aluminum, while cheaper and lighter, doesnt conduct heat as well as copper)

Ok billion dollar idea: selectively breed yeast until it can make it. I leave the details as an exercise for the reader.

[-] Liz@midwest.social 6 points 7 months ago

Cocoa isn't a single compound, if you extracted the pure chemical everyone claims is chocolate, you'd be very disappointed. Your goal is still theoretically possible, just a lot harder than the usual yeast and E. Coli synthesis targets.

[-] afraid_of_zombies@lemmy.world 9 points 7 months ago

Would it help you solve the problem if I acted like one of those tech "visionaries" fired half your coworkers, posted problematic stuff on social media, stole your credit, worked you to the bone, and then micromanaged your output at the last moment?

Cause I am just saying I already own a black turtleneck and wear glasses.

[-] Liz@midwest.social 3 points 7 months ago

It's certainly worth trying!

Woah woah, we don't want to overproduce it

[-] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 28 points 7 months ago

Try Cardamom. That stuff is getting ridiculous, ~$20 for a small standard grocery store spice rack jar. Apparently climate change is affecting the production. I was making some Indian food and ran out, went to the store and was shocked at the sticker price. A quick calculation seems that it’s about $15,500/US ton, ~50¢/oz bulk market cost, whole allspice.

[-] Thassodar@lemm.ee 5 points 7 months ago

What common recipes use cardamom? I haven't made anything that uses it.

[-] AFaithfulNihilist@lemmy.world 8 points 7 months ago

I put it on a lot of things sweet and savory alike. It goes with the rosemary, pepper, salt and coriander when I roast potatoes. It also goes into snickerdoodles or a half dozen different kinds of cake. It also makes a really good additive to soap if you make your own soap.

It's such an underappreciated spice, at least in the US where nobody seems to know what's going on despite enjoying the food.

The only time people don't question what the flavor is, is when I make Indian food.

The Basmati rice recipe I was making called for it. Might have been another dish, but I forget.

[-] phdepressed@sh.itjust.works 6 points 7 months ago

Cardamom is a pretty common spice in Chai. It is also used in certain styles of biryani and various curries. Various indian sweets can also contain it. The Swedes apparently use it in cakes and pastries.

[-] afraid_of_zombies@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

Indian food. Rajma and naan is how I survived uni and it uses a fair amount.

[-] Daxtron2@startrek.website 3 points 7 months ago

Many Indian recipes

[-] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 2 points 7 months ago

Cardamom carrots are really good.

Yes, but also copper tastes terrible.

[-] BigBananaDealer@lemm.ee 7 points 7 months ago

thats your opinion not the rest of us

[-] lemmytry@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

yes, I love the taste of pig

[-] locke@sopuli.xyz 21 points 7 months ago

Time to start drinking copper

[-] blackluster117@possumpat.io 21 points 7 months ago

And stealing chocolate from the walls at construction sites.

[-] zabadoh@ani.social 3 points 7 months ago

I prefer my copper with a teaspoon of microplastics.

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.world 20 points 7 months ago

$9,000 per metric ton. So... $0.2551 per ounce. :)

Copper is $8,300 per metric ton or $0.2353 per ounce.

And yeah, 35,274 ounces in a metric ton. :)

[-] Diplomjodler@feddit.de 24 points 7 months ago

How much is that in football fields?

[-] InvestBurnout@fedia.io 26 points 7 months ago

About 10 screaming eagles per 5.72

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.world 7 points 7 months ago

A football field is 57,600 square feet, so if you took 35,274 ounces of cocoa and spread it over 57,600 square feet, you'd get 0.6124 ounces per square foot.

[-] rbos@lemmy.ca 3 points 7 months ago

You would also ruin the cocoa.

A friend of mine growing up was a Smoot, it was always fun walking across the bridge. The numbers are regularly repainted and the repainting was also done by the city when resurfacing the bridge in the 80s.... lastly it can't be understated how hilarious it is that the man who was a measurement went on to be a chairman of ANSI and president of the ISO.

[-] blackluster117@possumpat.io 4 points 7 months ago

You just learned me something. Thanks for posting this.

$9,000 per metric ton. So 9$ per kg.
Copper is $8.3 per kg.

Thank you metric for not being a pain in the ass

[-] lengau@midwest.social 18 points 7 months ago

Ea-nāṣir gonna be getting complaints about the quality of cocoa

Fine, I'll put copper in my coffee since it's cheaper.

[-] SkybreakerEngineer@lemmy.world 6 points 7 months ago

Emotional allomancers hate this one weird trick

[-] ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 7 months ago

But you can't afford the coffee now, either.

You notice the bags of coffee beans went from 16oz bags for around $10 five years ago to now 10oz and 11 oz bags for $12?

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 11 points 7 months ago

Yeah but it makes rubbish wiring.

[-] nonailsleft@lemm.ee 3 points 7 months ago

Coppr can go succ it if wants more of my money

[-] SuperSpruce@lemmy.zip 3 points 7 months ago

So this is why a candy bar is now $2.69?

I used to buy chocolate candy all the time but they've seemed to double in price in 10 years, so I turned to pretzels instead, which are still cheap

[-] Ashe@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 7 months ago

Overlooking the whole child slave labor thing, yeah I suppose so

Willy Wonka is furiously amending his payment contract with the oompa loompas right about now.

Won't somebody think of the chocolate factory and its shareholders?

[-] trslim@pawb.social 2 points 7 months ago

I'd be ok if we ditched chocolate as a society.
