He also helped popularize "centrism" and tried to run as Presidential candidate on a... "both sides are wrong" platform.
He always positioned himself as an independent, basically, or "above" two-party politics.

He came to my high school while he was in office, I remember him being severely out of touch trying to do his photo ops and talking to students. I started to follow his career then and voted against him whenever I could because he had the absolute worst policies, even for the dumb kid I was. Eventually I moved out of state though, and started hating new politicians. But you always remember your first.
