The boat maker says the reason the yacht sunk was because it took on water. Amazing deduction skills there.

[-] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 40 points 2 years ago

Some guy bumped into the "sink boat" button sry

🤯 is he a physicist?

[-] RangeFourHarry@hexbear.net 64 points 2 years ago

It’s less that this particular billionaire died, but that he, and his lawyers who just got him off on a corruption case also died. Totally unrelated from a car hitting and killing his VP the same weekend.

[-] TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net 26 points 2 years ago

Yeah this isn't even a hit to get revenge on someone they wanted dead. This is a warning to anyone else thinking of doing the same thing.

I absolutely want to believe this because the timing is fucking wild. But I've been struggling to figure out how a freak storm was engineered to take out the boat. How did that happen?

My understanding is that there's video footage of the storm happening and the boat sinking, so it's obviously not a secret torpedo etc

[-] Sephitard9001@hexbear.net 24 points 2 years ago

Sometimes terrible things happen almost randomly in locations where the scum of the Earth happen to be standing and I couldn't be happier. Usually terrible things happen to neighborhoods of poor people who have shitty infrastructure

[-] RaisedFistJoker@hexbear.net 9 points 2 years ago

why couldnt they just torpedo the boat, while theres a storm

[-] ShimmeringKoi@hexbear.net 7 points 2 years ago

Could be boat sabotage? Not so much making the storm happen as knowing they'd likely try and sail in it, and making sure that like, the bilge pump or something wouldn't be up to the task.

I hadn't heard about his lawyers. Do you have a link?

Oh, nevermind, I hadn't realized they were also on the boat.

Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Big ups to my homie, God, for specifically targeting this guy.

[-] Rom@hexbear.net 31 points 2 years ago

"Rich guy thwarts justice, celebrates on his yacht, then drowns after a tornado hits his boat and it sinks" really does sound like it could be an Old Testament story.

[-] Isopod_Activities@hexbear.net 22 points 2 years ago

he invoked the wrath of poseidon. let that be a lesson for all yacht owners.

[-] PoY@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 2 years ago

the great orca summoned his ship to the sea floor courtroom for a preliminary hearing

[-] WhyEssEff@hexbear.net 37 points 2 years ago

when billionaires get antsy and lack enrichment in their enclosures they have an instinctual urge to have an accident at sea that is tangentially related to the titanic.

You guys remember when they stopped looking for those workers that were knocked into the harbor when that boat in Baltimore hit the bridge earlier this year, after like a single day of looking?

[-] keepcarrot@hexbear.net 24 points 2 years ago

How many billionaires are there? Can the ocean kill one per year?

[-] PoY@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 2 years ago

that is definitely not a high enough rate

[-] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 2 years ago

Forbes lists 2,781 for 2024, so probably just the cocaine gets more killed per year than sea.

[-] AOCapitulator@hexbear.net 7 points 2 years ago

Also a dead billionaire usually makes another billionaire or two instantly from inheritance

[-] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 2 years ago

How about family ~~cocaine~~ sea trips?

dozens drown in a capsize right off the Atlantic Coast and they don't even bother to check for survivors... but that's because they're poor

Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
