Installing update 1 of 100

discord sucks but there isn't a good enough replacement yet that fills the same niche. tbh i'd be happy to pay a small monthly fee that goes towards maintenance costs of an open source app that doesn't feel the need to do all this bullshit and provides the features discord had 5 years ago, more than i'd be happy to pay for discord nitro.

[-] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 1 points 1 hour ago

I like Matrix, but it is still a bit too janky and unrefined to recommend for general audiences.

[-] ProfessorOwl_PhD@hexbear.net 4 points 19 hours ago

If you're on Linux Vesktop is an alternative client that strips out the bullshit. It technically breaks Discord's T&Cs but they haven't cared yet.

[-] adultswim_antifa@hexbear.net 73 points 2 days ago

a lotta yall still dont get it

orb holders can use multiple nitro credits on a single quest

[-] Rom@hexbear.net 31 points 2 days ago

how do i convert them to slurpcoins?

[-] barrbaric@hexbear.net 24 points 2 days ago

As an orb holder, you're entitled to 1 slurpcoin per orb. To verify that you hold the orbs you say you do, you should send them to the wallet of a slurpcoin verifier so that they can assess your orbs and then give you an appropriate number of slurpcoin tokens.

[-] Rom@hexbear.net 22 points 2 days ago

Great, I'll get right on it. I'm gonna convert them to fartbucks so I can pay for a Grok subscription.

yes oh my god it's infuriating, like no i dont want to go on your kiddy diddler platform to get the files for your fucking total conversion mod!! just put it on Moddb like EVERYONE ELSE

[-] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 22 points 1 day ago

I have no idea how it even caught on. It was like one day, everyone wanted to be on discord to chat.

"We're literally playing a game with in-game voice chat. Just use that?"

"No bro let's run a third party app in the background that increases latency trust me bro just get discord bro."

Just why? It isn't secure or private. It doesn't do anything we weren't already doing with existing technology. Where did it even come from?

[-] imogen_underscore@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago

i hate discord as much as the next person but i don't think it's that weird, it is quite nice to have a centralised voice+text zone for your gamer buddies or whatever. my group just got sick of skype getting worse one day and switched. now we await the next alternative because discord has gotten to suck so bad too

[-] doublepepperoni@hexbear.net 17 points 1 day ago

"No bro let's run a third party app in the background"

This part isn't that weird if you're playing with friends. You'll probably want to get everyone together and make sure everone's mics work before you fire up the game or try to load into the same match. Also if you're playing with friends you're probably also just gonna talk about stuff you don't want randos to hear.

Before Discord, my friend group used Skype and Steam Chat for this purpose on PC, but also Xbox Live's party chat back when the Xbox 360 was a thing

Seriously. I downloaded it once, realized it's like shitty slack (and slack is already shitty slack) , uninstalled. Call me old, but I don't want to be part of a community that uses discord as it's main means of communication.

Maybe this is how usenet or mailing list people felt about forums 20 years ago.

[-] umbrella@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 day ago

all my homies hate discord

[-] CommunistCuddlefish@hexbear.net 48 points 2 days ago

I open discord.

Some popup gets in my way.

I look for the x and close it.

I go check messages.

I close discord.

This has been going on for years. I still don't know what "Nitro" is. Other than forums, my understanding of Discord and usage of it is basically the same as it was in like 2015 or 16 when I had to quit using Skype and switch to Discord because Skype finally broke the tricks I was using to block its in-app ads.

[-] fox@hexbear.net 26 points 2 days ago

Nitro is like a monthly subscription and you can donate nitro "points" to servers on a monthly basis, and more points means the server gets better services like higher bitrates and various flashy whatever and moderation tools

[-] Dessa@hexbear.net 28 points 2 days ago

People pay lile 15 bucks a month for emotes, it's insane.

[-] boiledfrog@hexbear.net 18 points 1 day ago

Hexbear Gold+ could be a goldmine

[-] 7bicycles@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago

Monthly subscription to unlock hexbear hardmode which disables the word filter so you're free of the sc*unthorpe problem. But the rules still apply

[-] SoyViking@hexbear.net 11 points 1 day ago

It unlocks premium highres PPB

[-] TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It unlocks the ability to post the full res DPRK soldier once per day.

[-] Biggay@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago

The DPRK soldier lore is so funny I laugh every time it gets brought up

[-] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 11 points 1 day ago

subscription but it enables ads

[-] CommunistCuddlefish@hexbear.net 18 points 1 day ago

I zoom in, screenshot the cool emotes when people use them, and then I can just post them as responses for free

People gave up IRC for this bullshit

[-] Owl@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago

IRC doesn't really work on the modern internet where there are moderation concerns beyond a 14 year old with a spam script.

The XMPP folks are slowly picking away at being able to do grouped chatrooms over that protocol. Hopefully they figure that out before Discord completely implodes.

[-] footfaults@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 13 hours ago

IRC v3 protocol was an attempt to modernize, and if the market didn't fragment there surely would have been more changes to become more modern.

XMPP, likewise had similar issues. Google and Facebook embraced then extinguished it.

Wow, gambling mechanics in Skype? Just what I needed

[-] CthulhusIntern@hexbear.net 26 points 1 day ago

Discord was, at one point, the perfect app. But capitalism demands it does stuff like this so its profits can keep increasing.

[-] ButtBidet@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago

Imagine the state just paid the <200k a year (fuck IDK) needed for server costs, and all development was done by volunteers, in an open source environment.

[-] 9to5@hexbear.net 36 points 2 days ago

Cant wait for the AI integration isaac-pog

[-] Dessa@hexbear.net 16 points 2 days ago

It's already there. Discord has official AI bots (that are disabled by most servers)

my biggest local org mostly communicates on discord agony-shivering

[-] descartador@lemmy.eco.br 18 points 1 day ago

Infect them with the federated bug

[-] TommyBeans@hexbear.net 8 points 1 day ago

My employer communicates solely through what’s app and discord. I think about quitting just to delete those apps from my phone

[-] Euergetes@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago

sadly a bunch of gamer dumbdumbs have decided Discord should also be the replacement for traditional forums for basic shit like support or download links

discord is a bit nicer for actually working on mods than older forums, i do kinda loathe the teams that make you join for downloads/support but as a free casual organization tool every mod these days uses it, not much of leap to consolidate/attempt to host (they shouldnt though obv, use moddb you creeps)

[-] Strayce@lemmy.sdf.org 19 points 1 day ago

I think they IPO'd recently. The march of enshittification continues.

The forum thing is so real, back in my day we had to use gamefaqs uphill in the snow both ways and we LIKED IT.

[-] PorkrollPosadist@hexbear.net 22 points 2 days ago

Facebook isn't real. Discord isn't real.
