Honestly it fits my theory that one of the Dakotas doesn't really exist.

It's probably where all the birds are controlled from.

[-] MutilationWave@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

One of them certainly shouldn't exist. The fact that that area is split into two states is only to have two more Republican Senators.

State borders are strange. Like why the part of Florida in the central time zone isn't just Alabama doesn't make sense to me.

Imaginary corn. Like John Peters, you know, the farmer, grows.

[-] stupidcasey@lemmy.world 27 points 1 year ago

Could you imagine living in Hawaii and not having readily available corn fields? How would I do all my corn field based activities?

[-] pomfegranate@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

I was literally just thinking that we need more corn fields here

[-] stupidcasey@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Ohio is nice this time of year and all the kids are taking about it.

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Shut your damn mouth nobody ever liked it here.

[-] JackLSauce@lemmy.world 25 points 1 year ago

Get your shit together, Alaska!

[-] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 year ago

Embarrassing

“No data“ it at that point

[-] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago

TIL most US corn is Republican

The second highest on this map, illinois, is a Dem state

[-] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 33 points 1 year ago

To be fair, the corn isn’t growing in the blue part of Illinois

[-] BlueLineBae@midwest.social 11 points 1 year ago

Yes it is. As a resident, I can attest that the corn is growing about damn near everywhere.

[-] shalafi@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Never been to Chicagoland? Every empty field is filled in with corn. Smash a gas station flat? Now it's a cornfield.

[-] modifier@lemmy.ca 15 points 1 year ago

Multiple counties in Illinois voted in favor of exploring secession from the state because they don't like how Chicago turns the state blue. It would definitely be a red state without us.

[-] rigatti@lemmy.world 20 points 1 year ago

Every state would be a red state without the major cities.

[-] A7thStone@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Except Massachusetts apparently.

Only because of Chicago & C(r)ook County. Virtually the rest of Illinois is red.

Hard to believe there is no data on corn fields in the home state of the Corn Palace.

This makes me wonder what the map creator considers a green amount of corn to be lol. 100%?

[-] Naz@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 year ago

To be fair, corn is yellow

[-] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

0.4 and 0.7% are different colors, but 10 and 37% are the same

[-] Jimmyeatsausage@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

And how do we have NO DATA about the crops growing in any state?

[-] qarbone@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Corn has consumed anyone who could answer.

[-] verity_kindle@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 year ago

We are the children...of ethanol.

[-] Melatonin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 year ago

Why are you telling me which states have no data?

I thought this was about corn?

[-] atro_city@fedia.io 13 points 1 year ago

I don't agree with the color choice. Green would've been much nicer.

[-] MutilationWave@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

It all should have been shades of yellow.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

Indiana Beach commercials did not lie to me after all!

[-] MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 year ago

Monocultures are environmentally devastating btw.

[-] unmagical@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 year ago

There is a massive swing in each of those colors.

[-] billygoat@catata.fish 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Yeah, 10%, 20%, and 37% should each be ~~buffet~~ different colors.

Damn autocorrect

[-] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Really? Only 0.4%?

Because it sure feels like there's way more corn here than that.

[-] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

If you’re referring to CA, it’s % of the entire state. Think of how much of CA is arid, mountainous, or otherwise unsuitable for corn or other agriculture.

[-] Comment105@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

You're probably seeing mostly grapes, tomatoes, cotton and cannabis, as well as grains that aren't corn?

[-] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 3 points 1 year ago

I definitely see more corn than all of those other things combined. And it's not even for human consumption; it's for the cows.

[-] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 year ago

I can't imagine 1/3 of everything you see in an entire state being corn.

[-] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Try driving through it. It's horrible.

Can confirm. I live in the Midwest.

[-] pugsnroses77@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago

if the numbers seem low dont forget about soy. and maybe wheat or alfalfa

[-] shalafi@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Having lived in Chicagoland, what are the corn growing incentives there?! Every empty field in the city is full of corn. Seems smart.

Having flown over Iowa in a small plane many times this checks out

[-] Default_Defect@midwest.social 4 points 1 year ago

Living in Iowa, this checks out. All I know is corn.

[-] SARGE@startrek.website 4 points 1 year ago

I'll be honest, I thought Ohio would be higher...

[-] evidences@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

The other 87% of Ohio is soy beans

[-] QuarterSwede@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Drove through North Dakota once. It was all corn for hours. Absolutely stupid amounts.
